I. Ch. vi. 14. If ye forgive men their trefpaffes, your beavenly Father will also forgive you. Ch. vii. 1. Judge not, left ye be judged: ver. 2. With what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

II. Ch. xviii. 6, 7. 0 δ ̓ ἂν σκανδαλίσῃ ἕνα τῶν μικρῶν τάς των τῶν πιςευόντων εἰς ἐμὲ, συμφέρει αὐτῷ ἵνα κρεμασῇ μύλος ὀνικὸς ἐπὶ τὸν τράχηλον αὐτῷ, καὶ airỡ, καταποντισθῇ ἐν τῷ πελάγει τῆς θαλάσσης. Οὐαὶ τῷ κόσμῳ ἀπὸ τῶν σκανδάλων, &c. i. e. But

whofo fhall offend one of these little ones, which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the fea. Wo unto the world because of offences, &c.

I. Ch. xiii. Forgive, that ye may be forgiven; as ye judge, so ye shall be judged; with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.

Clemens advises the Corinthians here, to remember these and other sayings of the Lord Jefus.

II. Ch. xlvi. Monte Tw λόγων Ἰησὲ τὸ Κυρίε ἡμῶν. Εἶπε γάρ· Οὐαὶ τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ ἐκείνῳ· κατ λὸν ἦν αὐτῷ εἰ ἐκ ἐγεννήθη, ἡ ἕνα τῶν ἐκλεκτῶν με σκανδαλίσαι κρεῖτα τον ἦν αὐτῷ περιτεθῆναι μύλον, κα καταποντισθῆναι εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν, ἡ ἕνα τῶν μικρῶν με σκανδαλίσαι: i. e. Remember the words of the Lord Jefus; for he faid, Wo to that man; it had been better for him if he had not been born, than that he should offend one of my elect. It were better for him that a millftone were put upon him (his neck), and that he were drowned in the fea, than to have offended one of these little ones.

tients, joined feveral texts of Scripture together; and that he made ufe in this collection of the Gofpels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke; and this is not improbable; however it is certain, that he makes ufe of another place of St. Matthew, (viz. xxvi. 24.) the words, It had been better for him if he had not been born, being there spoke of Judas Iscariot, and in neither of the three Evangelists speaking of offences.

IV. Ch. vii. 21. Οὐ πᾶς ὁ λέγων μοι, Κύριε, Κύριε, εἰσελεύ σεται εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τῶν ἐρανῶν, ἀλλ ̓ ὁ ποιῶν τὸ θέλημα τὸ πατρός με τὸ ἐν ἐρανοῖς : i. e. Not every one that faith unto me, Lord, Lord, fhall enter into the kingdom of heaven, but he that doth the will of my Father, who is in heaven..

V. Ch. vii. 23. Οὐδέποτε ἔγνων ὑμᾶς· ἀποχωρεῖτε ἀπ ̓ ἐμᾶ, οἱ ἐργαζόμενοι τὴν ἀνομίαν : i. e. I never knew you; depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

VI. Ch. x. 16, 26, 28. Ἰδὲ, ἐγὼ ἀποςέλλω ὑμᾶς ὡς πρός βατα ἐν μέσῳ λύκων —26. Μὴ ἐν φοβηθῆτε αὐτές—28. Καὶ μὴ φοβήθητε ἀπὸ τῶν ἀποκτεινόντων τὸ σῶμα, τὴν δὲ ψυχὴν μὴ δυναμένων ἀποκτεῖναι· φοβήθητε δὲ μᾶλλον ἢ δυνάμενον καὶ ψυχὴν καὶ σῶμα ἀπολέσαι ἐν γείννη : i. e. Behold, I fend you forth as sheep in the

men, him will I confefs before my Father.

IV. Ch. iv. Λέγει γάρ, οὐ πᾶς ὁ λέγων μοι, Κύριε, Κύριε, σω θήσεται, ἀλλὰ ὁ ποιῶν τὴν δικαι οσύνην : i. e. For the Lord) faith, Not every one that faith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall be faved, but he that worketh righteousness.

V. Ch. iv. Υπάγετε ἀπ' ἐμᾶ, ἐκ οἶδα ὑμᾶς, πόθεν ἔσε, έρω γάται ἀνομίας: i. e. Depart from me, I know ye not whence ye are, ve workers of iniquity.

This seems to be a citation, like that above out of the firft Epiftle, No. 2, if it was not taken out of Luke, (fee the Appendix to Vol. I, p. 412, 415.) the words πόθεν ἔσε being in Luke xiii. 27. and not in Matthew.

VI. Ch. v. Ἔσεσθε ὡς ἀρνία ἐν μέσῳ λύκων.—Μὴ φοβείσθωσαν τὰ ἀρνία τὰς λύκες μετὰ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν αὐτά· καὶ ὑμεῖς μὴ φοβεῖσθε τὲς ἀποκτείνοντας ὑμᾶς, καὶ μηδὲν ὑμῖν δυναμένες ποιεῖν· ἀλλὰ φορ βεῖσθε τὸν μετὰ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν ὑμᾶς ἔχοντα ἐξεσίαν ψυχῆς καὶ σώματος, τῷ βαλεῖν εἰς γεένναν πυρός : i. e. Ye shall be as lambs in the

midst of wolves-26. Fear them not therefore;-28. And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the foul; but rather fear him, which is able to deftroy both foul and body in hell.

VII. Ch. xvi. 26. Tyap ὠφελεῖται ἄνθρωπῶ, ἐὰν τὸν κόσμον ὅλον κερδήσῃ, τὴν δὲ ψυχὴν αὐτῶ Snuwd; i. e. For what is a man

profited, if he should gain the whole world, and lofe his own foul?

VIII. Ch. xii. 50. "Os γὰρ ἂν ποιήσῃ τὸ θέλημα το πας τρός με τὸ ἐν ἐρανοῖς, αὐτός με ἀδελφὸς, καὶ ἀδελφὴ, καὶ μήτηρ isiv: i. e. For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the fame is my brother and fifter and mother.

midst of wolves:-Let not the lambs fear the wolves after death, and do not ye fear thofe who (can) kill you, and (afterwards) can do you no harm; but fear him who has power, after your death, to caft both foul and body into hell fire.

In the midst of this passage there is a queftion of Peter to Chrift, viz. What if the wolves fhould tear in pieces the lambs? but concerning this, fee the Appendix to Vol. I. p. 413, 415.

VII. Ch. vị. Tú gặp sò ốc λος, ἐάν τις τὸν ὅλον κόσμον κερδήσῃ, τὴν δὲ ψυχὴν ζημιώση; i. e. For what will it profit a man, if he should gain the whole world, and lofe his own foul?

VIII. Ch. ix. Kai yap

πεν ὁ Κύριος· ἀδελφοί με στοί εἰσιν, οἱ ποιῶντες τὸ θέλημα τε πατρός με : i. e. For the Lord hath faid, They are my brethren, who do the will of my Father.

The Shepherd of HERMAS. in corde mala concupifcentia ? i. e. Does it not seem to you to be a fin, for a good man to have luftful inclinations in his beart?

He who confiders that this is faid by a woman, who exprefsly in the words before charges Hermas with fin against God and her, not for fornication (for this he denies), but for having defired or having in his heart lufted after her, will easily see there is a reference to Chrift's words.

II. Lib. i. Vis. ii. §. 2. Juravit enim Dominus per Filium fuum: qui denegaverit filium et fe, defpondens vitam illius, et ipfe denegaturus est illum, in advenientibus diebus. Ii autem qui nunquam denegaverint, ob nimiam mifericordiam propitius factus eft illis; i. e. The Lord hath fworn by his Son, that whofoever fhall deny his Son and him, being afraid of his life, he will alfo deny him in the world to come; but those who, fhall never deny him, he will then of his great mercy receive them into his favour.
