St. MATTHEW's Gospel. when tribulation or perfecution arifeth because of the word, by and by he is offended; he alfo that received the ward among the thorns, is he that heareth the word, and the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choak the word, &c.

IV. Ch. xxvi. 24. We unto that man-it had been good for that man if he had not been born.

V. Ch. v. 28. I fay unto you, that whofoever looketh on a woman to luft after her, bath. committed adultery with her already in his heart.

The Shepherd of HErmas.

tias hujus feculi; cum ergo venerit tribulatio, propter divitias fuas et negotiationes abnegant Dominum; i. e. They are perfons profeffing Chriftianity (i. e. who own the word), but having also the riches of this world, when tribulation arifeth (on account of the word), by reafon of their riches and worldly cares they deny the Lord, or (which is the fame) are offended.

IV. Lib. i. Vis. iv. §. 2. Væ iis-melius erat illis non nafci; i. e. Wo unto themfor it had been better for thefe men they had not been born.

The phrafe is evidently borrowed from St. Matthew.

V. Lib. ii. Mandat. iv. §. 1. Non afcendat tibi cogitatio cordis de alieno matrimonio, aut de fornicatione; hæc enim parit peccatum magnum. -Si enim hæc cogitatio in cor tuum afcenderit tam mala, magnum peccatum facis ; i. e. Let not any purpose be entertained in thy mind of committing adultery, or fornication, for even this purpose produceth a great fin.-And if fuch evil purpose be in thy mind, thou committeft great fin. See above out of this book of Hermas, No 1.

St. MATTHEW's Gospel. VI. Ch. xix. g. Whofoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery; and whofe marrieth her which is put away, doth commit adultery. See Matt. v. 23.

VII. Ch. xxi. 22. All things whatsoever ye shall afk in prayer, believing (i. e. as in ver. 21, not doubting), ye Ball receive.

The Shepherd of Hermas.

VI. Lib. i. Mandat. iv. §. 1. Si permanferit in vitio fuo mulier-dimittat illam vir, et vir per fe maneat. Quod fi dimiferit mulierem fuam, et aliam duxerit, et ipfe moechatur-propter hoc præceptum eft vobis, ut cœlibes maneatis, tum vir, tum mulier; poteft enim in hujuf modi pœnitentia effe; i, e. If a wife fhall perfift in adulterous practices, a husband may put her away, and live alone; but if he shall marry another woman, he committeth adultery

Mr. Nye has in part obferved this place of Hermas, and fays, no doubt it was taken from St. Luke xvi. 18. See his Defence of the Canon againft Amyntor, p. 48.

VII. Lib. ii. Mandat. ix. Tolle a te dubitationem, et nihil omnino dubites dubites-pete fine dubitatione-petitionem animæ tuæ adimplebit-ex omnibus petitionibus tuis nihil deerit tibi, fi fine dubitatione petieris a Domino; i. e. Remove from thee all doubting, and doubt not at all-afk without doubting (or in faith), and (God) will grant thy requests -all things whatsoever thou fhalt afk fhall be given thee, if thou

VIII. Lib. iii. Simil. v. §. 2. He feems to have borrowed the fimilitude from the parable of our Saviour referred to in the oppofite column.

IX. Lib. iii. Simil. ix. The Church is compared to a tower built upon a rock. See §. 2, 3, 12, 13, 14.

The Epiftle of POLYCARP to the Philippians.

I. Cap, ii. The words in Polycarp are near the fame with those referred to in the parallel column. I only observe, that he introduces them, Μνημονεύσαντες δὲ ὧν εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος didácnwv: i. e. Remember the things which the Lord faid in his teaching (or Sermon on the mount).

After these it will not be improper to add, that in the Fragments of the Refponfiones of Polycarp, published by Feuardentius in Irenæus, lib. 3. c. 3. I' find two places of St. Matthew's Gospel expounded, or paraphrafed; viz.

1. Matthæus Dominum dixiffe teftatur, quod Moyfes fcribit Adam loquutum fuiffe hoc modo; Hoc nunc os ex

offibus meis, et caro ex carne

1. Matthew teftifies that our Lord faid, It was written by Mofes, that Adam faid thus; This now is bone of my bone, and flesh of my flesh; for this caufe

mea; propter hoc relinquet homo patrem et matrem, &c.

2. Calicem meum bibetis, &c. Per hujufmodi potum fignificat paffionem &c.

St. MATTHEW's Gofpel.

I. Ch. xviii. 19. If two of you all agree on earth, as touching any thing that they fhall afk, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in beaven; for where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

II. Ch. xii. 33. 'Ex yap T καρπὸ τὸ δένδρον γινώσκεται : i. e. For the tree is known by its fruit.

III. Ch. xxiii. 8, 10. Ets γάρ ἐσιν ὑμῶν ὁ καθηγητής : i. e. For one is your master.

IV. Ch. ii. 2. Eidower yog` αὐτοῦ τὸν ἀτέρα : i. e. We have feen his ftar.

Ch. xxvii. 52, 53. And the graves were opened, and

cause shall a man leave father and mother, &c. See Matt. xix. 5. and Gen. ii. 23, 24

2. Matt. xx. 23. Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, &c. by which cup he meant the martyrdom of those two Apostles, John and James.

The Leffer, or thofe which are fuppofed the genuine Epiftles of IGNATIUS, particularly; 1. The Epifle of IGNATIUS to the Ephefians.

I. Ch. v. Εἰ γὰρ ἑνὸς καὶ δευτέρω προσευχὴ τοσαύτην ἰχὺν ἔχει, &c. For if the prayers of one or two be of fuch force, &c. The larger Epiftle adds, "re τὸν Χρισὸν ἐν αὐτοῖς ἐςάναι, as that Chrift will be in the midst of them.
