PREFACE.

S the peace of Europe, or at least of this nation, feems now to be efta

A blihed, it is to be boped, that it may laft for a great number of years. It

is even to be wifhed by every true Briton, that we may have an opportunity to take proper measures for paying off a large share of our public debt, and abolifbing fome of those taxes which now lie fo heavy upon the labour of the poor, and confequently upon our manufactures of every kind.

How long our prefent peaceful aud happy ftate may last is beyond the ken of mortal man; but this we do know, that the best way for making it lafting, is to fablish and prefer ve concord and harmony amongst ourselves; for our fuccess in the last war, and the many bold enterprises fo gloriously executed, by the bravery of our men and the conduct of our commanders both by fea and land, has given the world fuch a proof of what the British people may do, when united among themselves, that no nation in Europe will wantonly attack us, or give us any just reafon for attacking them.

And as we are now bleffed with a fovereign who does not feem inclined to involve us in any broils, for the fake of indulging either the ambition, or refentment, of any foreign fiate, we have only to take care not to embroil ourselves by our own baughtiness, vanity, or avarice; to encourage any foreign neighbour to infult us, by fomenting parties and inteftine divifions amongst ourselves, which his majefty has most graciously refolved to annihilate if it be poffible; and has thereby plainly hewn, that he defigns to purfue no measures but juch as are truly British; for a king who defigns to purfue any other, may always chufe to put himself at the bead of a faction, because, if he will facrifice the country to their felfifh views, he is fure that they will be always ready to facrifice it to his foreign.

In our prefent happy fituation we may therefore expect, that arts and Sciences, and improvements of all kinds, will be encouraged, particularly the agriculture, manufactures, aud fisheries of the British islands, and the clearing, planting, and fecuring that vaft territory which we are now indifputably possessed of in America. All feasible projects, or schemes for these useful purposes, we jhall take care to give the earliest and beft accounts of,. in our future Magazines, as we have reason to hope for great affiftance from our multitude of correspondents, to whom we have already been infinitely obliged, and for which we return them our moft hearty acknowledgments, as we likewife do to the publick in general, for the particular countenance they have always hitherto fhern to our Magazine, the continuance of which we fball use our utmost endeavours to deserve.

A DESCRIPTION of the FRONTISPIECE.

T reprefents Mercury introducing Concord, Agriculture, and the Arts, Commerce, is reprefented, as ufual, with his caducy, or conjuring rod, in his hand, the virtue of which was fuch, that with a fingle touch it could reconcile any two of the most inveterate enemies. Concordia is reprefented by the goddess Concordia, with her crown of Pomegranates upon her head, and a jewel in the fhape of a heart upon her breast. Agriculture is represented by the goddess Ceres, the conftant companion of the former, and has her cornucopia and nofegay of poppies in her hand, a crown of wheat-ears on her head, and a plough near her feet. And in the back ground, to represent the useful arts, are fields of corn, a tenter-ground, a country village, a farm houfe, &c. &c.

The following is the fubftance of the two lines at the bottom, taken from the fecond epode of Horace :

Happy the man, who free from law and ftrife,
With his own oxen ploughs his father's field.
