I'm now a Member of that Court
That fettles, in the last refort,

The business of the nation;

Where, fince I'm kick'd up ftairs by thee,
I'll clearly prove my pedigree

As old as the creation †.
But not omnipotence alone
Adorns the owner of a throne;
His attributes país counting:
Of juftice, when he hangs poor knaves,
Of mercy, when rich rogues he faves,
He's rightly call'd the fountain.
In part of payment for thy favours,
I tender thee my beft endeavours,
If haply thou shalt need 'em ;
Nor fhall I grudge thy fhirt to air,
For all the Bed-room Lords declare
Thy fervice perfect freedom.

The Devils of old, as Milton fings,
Were angry with the King of Kings,
And thought he'd reign'd too long:
Of late the herd of Gallic swine
Dar'd to deny the right divine

Of Kings, to govern wrong.

" Go," faid the Lord, "my fon, purfue
This factious, diabolic crew,

And on them pour my ire:

In hell, then, let them count their gains,
There dwell in adamantine chains,

And roaft in penal fire !”

+ Clown. You were best say these robes are not gentlemen born. Give me the lie, do; and try whether I am not now a gentleman born.

Autolicus. I know you are now, Sir, a gentleman born.,
Clown. Aye, and have been fo any time these four hours.

WINTER'S TALE, A& V. Sc. II.

So

So didst thou fend thy chofen fon,
With fword, and bayonet, and gun,
French Atheism up to root:

He fought, he beat, the rebels fell;
He fent their armies all to hell-
Or tried at least to do't.

Yield never to fuch fiends accurs'd;
Fight on, and bid them do their worst;
And, if thy Commons ftill
Shall vote thee cafh, to fubfidize
Our trusty, firm, fincere allies,
We'll not reject the bill.

These truths, when first we rise to speak,
With voice irrefolute and weak,

As is the mode, we utter ;
But, in the progress of th' oration,
Enflam'd with lordlike indignation,
At Jacobins I fputter:-

"My Luds, you've heard a noble Lud
Wifely advise to shed more blood;
For who that wears a star,
While honour in this house survives,
Values a rush plebeian lives?

I therefore vote for war.

"What! leave Religion in the lurch!
No:-fink our commerce-fave the church;
Nor fpare men, money, nor fhip;
Fresh millions after millions fling-
For if we lose our Church and King,
What will be left to worship?

"My Luds, the reverend Peers in lawn,
Have laid their precious fouls in pawn
Upon the war's fuccefs;

These wizards know a curious fpell,

Which, rightly us'd, will Heaven compel

The British arms to bless.

[blocks in formation]

"Let ev'ry foul forbear to treat
His hungry maw with drink or meat,
On We'n'fday next till e'en;
The grumbling of our famifh'd inwards
(So 'tis decreed by holy Synods)
Cures God Almighty's fpleen."
But I digrefs.Whoever wishes*
To share the treat of loaves and fishes,
The Courtier's faith muft cherish;
Which faith, unless each mother's child
Keep pure and whole, and undefil'd,
He shall moft furely perifh!

All epithets of God to thee
Belong in th' infinite degree,

Juft, powerful, good and wife;
And, what behov'd me firft to fing,
As God's eternal, fo the King
Of England never dies.

Then hymn his praise, ye chofen few,
Whom he vouchfafes a nearer view
Of his effulgent glory;

Avaunt, ye Whigs! no peace expect,
For none is number'd with th' Elect,
Except an arrant Tory.

This faith, like Vicar erft of Bray,
I'll hold until my dying day,
And perfevere ftedfast in;
And whofo dare gainfay or fcoff
The smallest particle thereof,
Be damn'd to everlasting.

ROYAL INTERVIEW OF A MAYOR.

URING the reign of King James II. and when the people were much oppreffed and burthened with taxes, that Monarch made a very expenfive tour through England; and on his return he flept at the Palace of Winchefter. The Mayor and Corporation, for the honour done them by this royal vifit, determined to addrefs his Majefty in the morning; but as the Mayor could neither read nor write, it was agreed that the Recorder should prompt him on the occafion:

Accordingly, being introduced into the Royal prefence, and every thing ready for the ceremony, the Recorder, by way of encouraging the Mayor, who appeared aukward and embarraffed, gently jogged his elbow, and at the fame time whispered in his ear, " Hold up your head---look like a man.” The Mayor, miftaking this for the beginning of the fpeech, ftared the King boldly in the face, and with a loud voice repeated, "Held up your head---look like a man." The Re

corder, amazed at this behaviour, again whispered the Mayor, "What the devil do you mean?" The Mayor, in the fame manner, inftantly repeated "What the devil do you mean?" The Recorder, chagrined at this untoward circumftance, and fearing his Majefty's difpleasure, ftill whispering in the Mayor's ear, By G-d, Sir, you'll ruin us all!" which the Mayor taking to be a continuance of the fpeech, and ftill ftaring the King in the face, with a louder voice than before, repeated, "By G-d, Sir, you'll ruin us all." The King, on this, rofe with some anger; but being informed of the cause of this rough addrefs, his Majefty was pleafed to pass it by with a fmile, and the Corporation was perfectly fatisfied with the honour done them.

The charges were then read, fetting forth that he, with others of his own fhip, and part of the crew of the St. Stephen's, having laid afide all regard for the intereft and welfare of their King and Country, had long been endeavouring, wickedly, ambitioufly, and avaricioufly, to raise a mutiny for increase of pay; to difmifs their officers; forcibly to ufurp the command of their respective ships; and, in cafe of failure, had refolved (which it has pleased God providentially to prevent,) either to carry them into an enemy's port like traitors, or to blow them up like defperadoes.

The Prifoner pleaded Not Guilty. Captain Loughborough, commander of the Patrician, was called as firft witness for the prosecution.

2. Do you know the prifoner ?-A. Yes.
