THEODORIC THE FIRST, THAT Nation which we have supposed to be barbarous, because it bore the name of the Goths, occasionally produced men of great virtues and of great knowledge : Theodoric was of that description. In his faith he was an Arian, yet he never persecuted those who differed from him in his religious opinions. He was extremely displeased with those persons whom he sus. pected of coming over to his belief to gain his favour, and without really believing what they professed to believe.
