Spirit of the universe, and need no human intervention, no ordinance, no man, to come in between the soul and its Creator." Christ says: 66 No man cometh unto the Father but by Me," and requires outward confession, profession of faith, use of the means of grace which He provided. And to teach men that they may reach God without these things, is to make nature the way to God, however much the teacher in his heart may abhor naturalism.

Such are some of the chief objections which we have to make against the religious education of unbelievers, as now very commonly carried on in India. It is, we think, open to question whether education can be wisely used as a direct means of conversion at all. If it can be, it must be conducted, we believe, in a manner consistent with the principles which we have endeavoured to establish. For the present, however, we content ourselves with stating our objections to the existing system, and with expressing our hope that our criticisms, frank and unreserved as they are, may be received as they are offered, in a spirit of honest zeal to promote the conversion of the people of India.

THE

SYSTEM OF EDUCATION

IN

GOVERNMENT AND MISSION SCHOOLS

CONTRASTED

BY

LIEUT.-GEN. C. W. TREMENHEERE, C.B.

HENRY S. KING AND CO.

"General Tremenheere has done a public service by the pamphlet to which we here draw attention. . . . he has brought together a formidable array of facts and figures in support of the position taken up by the late Bishop of Bombay-with which it is well known that the late Metropolitan of India mainly agreed-in a remarkable series of papers published in the Indian Church Gazette "-Church Quarterly Review.

"We may hope that the pamphlet before us will call attention to many evils which appear to be in full force at present."— Guardian.

"It is a free, bold, earnest discussion of the merits and demerits of the present system of missionary schools. There is much in it that is obviously true, and that has already been deeply felt by many persons interested in missions. We feel sure that good must come of the attention which he has called to a very important question."-Calcutta Quarterly Review.
