EDINBURGH: PRINTED BY MACPHERSON & SYME,

12 South St David Street.

PREFACE.

ONE of the most interesting tours that can be made from Edinburgh, is to the South-eastern Border, a district celebrated in history, and remarkable throughout for its splendid display of "wood, water, hills, ruins, and fertile fields." The classic Tweed has been sung by many poets; border tradition, and border tale, can never lose their interest, and the story of border foray, feud, and warfare, has an attraction for all readers. Dryburgh Abbey has its own claims on the attention of the tourist, besides being the last earthly resting-place of Scotland's greatest novelist, Sir Walter Scott, while the vast magnificence of Melrose Abbey, with its rich Gothic architecture, and the picturesque and beautiful vale of Melrose, with the far renowned towers and treasures of Abbotsford, form scenes and subjects which every traveller in Scotland must of necessity make themselves acquainted with.

In the following pages, every information that can be useful to the traveller, in the line of route described, has

been carefully collected, especially as regards facilities and modes of conveyance-the different Railways have rendered this comparatively easy-hotel and inn accommodation, and all other matters of personal and particular interest to those who travel.

The Work is embellished with a highly finished Map of the line of route, and several Engravings; and the volume will form an appropriate companion to MENZIES' other Pocket Guide Books to various parts of Scotland, to each and' all of which,-a neatly got up and cheap series of Tourist's Books,-the attention of the public is respectfully requested.
