saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with ; but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father, And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren. Buit Jesus call. ed them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over ihem, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you; but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister ; and whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant ; even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
* And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things ? and who gave thee this authority? And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, 1 in like wise will tell you by what anthority I do these things. The baptism of Jobn, whence was it? from heaven, or of men ? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven ; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him? But if we shall say, Of men ; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet. And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things. But what think you? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to-day in my vineyard. He answered and said, I will not; but afterward he repented, and went. And he came to the second, and said likewise, And he answered and said, I go, sir ; and went not. Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I
say unto you, That the publicans and the har. lots go into the kingdom of God before you. For John came unto you in the way of rigliteousness, and ye believed him not ; but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might be. lieve him. Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to busbandmen, and went into a far country: and when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it. And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another. Again, he sent other servants more than the first : and they did unto them likewise. But Jast of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son. But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir ; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance. And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him. When the Lord, therefore, of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husband meu? They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render hin the fruits in their se Jesus saith' unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? Therefore say I unto you, The kingdoni of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. And whosoever shall fail on this stone shall be broken': but on whomso. ever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
* The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, and sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner : iny oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, and another to his ' merchandize : and the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them. But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy." Go ye, therefore, into the highways ; and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage. So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all, as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests. And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw tliere a man which had not on a wedding garment: and he saith unto him, Friend, hów camest thou in hither, not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. Then said the king to the servants, Bind hiin hand and foot, and take hiin away, and cast him into outer darkness;
there shall be weeping and grashing of teeth. For mány are called, but few are chosen.
Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might entangle him in his talk. And they sent out unto him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, Master, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, neither carest thou for any man; for thou regardest not the person of men. Tell us therefore, what thinkest thou; Is it lawful to give tribute unto Cesar, or not? But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites ? Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? They say unto him, Cesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Cesar the things which are Cesar's, and unto God the things that are God's. When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.
The same day caine to him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked him, saying, Master, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were with Hs seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother : likewise the second also, and the third unto the seventh. And last of all the woman died also. Therefore, in the resurrection, whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her. Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven. But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Ísaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living: And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine. :
But when the Pharisees had heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, they were gathered together. Then one of them, who was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, T'he son of David. He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord ? saying, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on any right hand, till I make thine eneinies thy footstool. li David then call him Lord, how is he his son ? And no man was able to answer liim a word ; neither durst any, man, from that day forth, ask him any more questions.
* Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to his disciples, saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: all, therefore, whatsoever they bid you observe, thal observe, and do; but do not ye after their works : for they say, and do not. For they bind heavy burdens, and grievons to be horne, and lay them ou men's shoulders; but they themselves will not bo've triem with one of their
