LADY'S MISCELLANY

NEW-YORK, December 14 1811.

"Be it our task,

To note the passing tidings of the times.

In London on the 5th Sept. a man was taken up and charged with stealing a pocket.book on which was written "Thos. Bradshaw," and it contained a certificate from New-York dated Nov. 7. 1810, The owner could not be found, and had probably sailed for America.

FROM THE WESTERN COURIER.

Col. Davis with more than martial power resisted the shock, and endeavoured by his unparelleled courage and presence of mind to form his troops. With comparatively few chosen heroes he fcharges the thick array of savage numbers. But courage and conduct in this preeminent son of Kentucky, could not avail, while the darkness of the night shrouded, tawny sons of the wood and a forest of savage tomahawks and rifles were dealing death around, in discharging his fire arms, which proved fatal to the savage arm just raised to shed his blood; he received in his breast three fatal balls; and when he was told an hour after, the enemy had been beaten, he said "I have done my duty, I am satisfied, my country is victorious," and a few hours after expired.

"Drop'd from his nerveless grasp the spear;

Closed his bright eye, and check'd his bright career,"

Nor yet abandon serious thought;

To him who shortly is to die.

-when Edward de Courtenay, after two campaigns on the plains of Flanders, in one of which the gallant Sidney fell, re-entered his native village toward the end of August 1587. He had lost his father a few months before his departure from the continent, a loss which had occasioned him the most severe affliction, and had induced him thus early in life to seek amid the din of arms, and the splendor of military parade, a pause from painful recollection. Time, however, though it had mitigated the first poignant emotions of grief, had not subdued the tender feelings of regret and sorrow, and the well known objects of his early childhood and his opening youth, associated as they were with the salutary precepts and fond affection of the best of parents, awakened in his mind a train of melancholy, yet soothing thoughts, as with slow and pausing teps he moved along the venera

ble avenue of trees, which led to his paternal mansion. Twilight had by this time wrapt every ob-. ject in a veil of pleasing obscurity; all was hushed in the softest repose, and the massiness of the foliage under which he passed, and the magnitude and solitary grandieur of his Gothic hall, impressed the imagination of Edward with deep sensations of solemnity and awe. Two grey-headed servants, who had lived for near half a century in the family, received their young master at the gate, and while the tears trickled down their withered cheeks, expressed with artless simplicity their joy, and blessed the return of the son of their ancient benefactor.
