Les sujets de Vierge peints par Raphaël sont si nombreux, que lorsqu'on veut les classer on doit considérer la poétique de la composition. C'est avec raison que M. Quatremère, dans sa Vie de Raphaël, a établi la distinction des tableaux où la Vierge et l'enfant Jésus ne sont plus considérés comme habitans de cette terre, mais comme apparaissant aux mortels avec tout l'appareil qui convient aux personnages célestes. Cette composition doit être rangée dans cette classe; elle a reçu le nom de la Vierge au baldaquin, à cause d'un baldaquin dont est surmonté le trône, et dont deux anges soutiennent les rideaux pour laisser voir la Vierge. Au bas du trône sont quatre figures qu'on regarde à tort comme des pères de l'église, tandis qu'elles représentent saint Pierre, saint Bruno, saint Antoine et saint Augustin. Quant Raphaël composa ce tableau, il avait encore quelque chose de la manière simple du Pérugin son maître, et il s'y trouve toute la naïveté qu'il avait avant de voir les ouvrages de Michel-Ange. L'enfant Jésus est plein de charme; les anges presentent une variété des plus agréables; les draperies sont diversifiées avec un talent que personne n'a connu comme Raphaël. Ce tableau est peint à la colle et verni; il a été gravé par Lorenzini et aussi par Nicollet pour la galerie de Florence dont il fait partie. Haut., 10 pieds; larg., 6 pieds. The pictures of the Virgin painted by Raphael are so numerous, that when we class them it should be according to the poetry of the composition. It is therefore that M. Quatremere, in his Life of Raphael, has established this feeling with regard to the pictures where the Virgin and the infant Jesus are considered no longer as inhabitants of the earth, but rather as if they appeared to us with all the accessories that belong to celestial beings. This composition has received the name of the Virgin with the canopy, on account of the canopy which surmounts the throne, the curtains of which are supported by two angels that the Virgin may be seen. At the foot of the throne are four figures which have been incorrectly regarded as the father of the church, when they represent saint Peter, saint Bruno, saint Anthony and saint Augustin. When Raphael composed this picture, he had some slight remaining of his master Perugino's manner, but in the picture there is all that artlessness and grace of which he lost something after having seen the works of Michael-Angelo. The infant Jesus is full of fascination, the angels are most agreeably vied; the draperies are diversified with a talent, of which novar body possessed so much as Raphael. This picture is painted in size and varnished; it has been engraved by Lorenzini, and also by Nicollet for the gallery of Florence to which it belongs.
