τὸν ναὸν Κυρία, καὶ εἶπεν αὐταῖς ὁ ἀρχιερεύς· Λάχετέ μοι ὧδε, τίς νήσεται χρυσόν, καὶ τὸν ὑάκινθον, καὶ τὸν κόκ κινον, καὶ τὴν βύσσον, καὶ τὴν ἀληθινὴν πορφύραν· καὶ ἐμνήσθη Ζαχαρίας περὶ τῆς Μαρίας, ὅτι ἐκ φυλῆς Δαβίδ ἐςι. Καὶ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτὴν, καὶ ἔλαχεν αὐτῇ αὐτῇ ἡ ή αληθινή πορφύρα, καὶ ἀπίει εἰς τὸν

οἶκον αὐτῆς. Ἐν δὲ τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ Ζαχαρίας ἐσίγησε, καὶ ἐγένετο ἀντ ̓ αὐτῇ Σαμεήλ, μέχρις ᾗ ἐλάλησε Ζαχαρίας. Μαρία δὲ λαθᾶσα τὴν ἀληθινὴν πορφύραν ἔνηθε.

ΧΙ. Καὶ λαβέσα την κάλ πην, ἐξῆλθε δὲ γεμίσαι ὕδωρ, καὶ ἤκεσε φωνὴν, λέγεσαν αὐτ τῇ· Χαίρε κεχαριτωμένη, ὁ Κύριο μετὰ σᾶς εὐλογημένη σὺ ἐν γυναιξί. Καὶ περιεβλέπετο δεξιᾷ καὶ ἀρισερά, πό θεν αὐτὴ ἡ φωνή. Καὶ σύν φωνή. Καὶ σύντρομῷ γενομένη, εἰσῆλθεν ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτῆς, καὶ ἀνέπαυσε τὴν κάλπην, καὶ λαβᾶσα τὴν πορφύραν, ἐκαθέσθη ἐπὶ τῇ

Temple of the Lord, and the High-prieft faid unto them, Caft lots before me now, who of Caf lots before you shall spin the golden thread, who the blue, who the fcarlet, who the fine linen, and who the true purple. But from that time Zacharias (the High-prieft) became dumb, and Samuel was placed in his room till Zacharias fpoke again. But Mary took the true purple, and did fpin it.

xi. And the took a pot, and went out to draw water, and heard a voice saying unto

her, Hail thou who art full of

grace, the Lord is with thee; thou art bleffed among women. And the looked round to the right and to the left (to fee)

whence that voice came, and then trembling went into her houre, and laying down the water-pot the took the purple,

and fat down in her feat to work it.

Καὶ εἰ ἐγώ, φησὶ, συλλήψομαι ἀπὸ Θεῖ ζῶντῳ, καὶ γεννήσω, ως πᾶσα γυνὴ γεννᾷ ; Εἶπε δὲ ὁ ἄγελοι ἐχ ὅτως, Μαρία, ἀλλὰ πνεῦμα ἅγιον ἐπελεύσεται ἐπί σε, καὶ δύναμις υψίσs ἐπισκιάσει σοι· διὸ καὶ τὸ γενόμενον ἔκ σε ἅγιον, κληθήσεται υἱὸς Θεῖ ζῶντῷ, καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτὰ Ἰησ

σἂν αὐτὸς γὰρ σώσει τον λαὶν αὐτῇ ἀπὸ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν αὐτῶν. Καὶ ἰδὲ ἡ συγγενής σε Ελισαβετ συνειληφυῖα ἐσιν υἱὸν ἐν γήρει αὐτῆς· καὶ τῷ μὴν ἕκτός ἐςιν αὐτῇ, τῇ λαλεμένη σείρα· ὅτι ἐκ άδυναπήσει πᾶν ῥῆμα παρὰ τῷ Θεῷ. Καὶ εἶπε Μαρία. Ιδὲ ἡ δέλη Κυρία, γένοιτό μοι κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμά στο

her, and faid, Fear not, Mary, for thou haft found favour in the fight of God; which when fhe heard, fhe reafoned with herfelf what that fort of falutation meant. And the Angel faid unto her, The Lord is with thee, and thou falt conceive: to which the replied, What! fhall I conceive by the living God, and bring forth as

all other women do? But the Angel returned answer, Not το, ο Mary, but the Holy Ghop fall come upon thee, and the power of the Moft High βall over hadow thee; wherefore that which fhall be born of thee hall be holy, and hall be called the Son of the Living God, and thou palt call his bis people from their fins. And name Jefus; for he shall favebebold thy coufin Elizabeth, fe alobath conceived a fon in her old age. And this now is the fixth month with her, who was called barren ; for nothing is Mary faid, Behold the handimpoffible with God. maid of the Lord, let it be unto me according to thy word.

Χαρὰν δὲ λαβᾶσα Μαρία ἀπίει προς Ελισάβετ, τὴν συγΓενίδα αυτ τῆς, καὶ ἔκρυσε την θύραν. καὶ ακέσασα ἡ Ἐλισάβετ, δραμέσα ήνοιξεν αὐτῇ, καὶ εὐλόγησεν αὐτὴν, καὶ εἶπε· Καὶ πόθεν μοι τ8το, ἵνα ἡ μήτηρ τὰ Κυρία με ἦλθεν πρός με ; Ιδὲ γὰρ ὡς ἐγένετο ὁ ἀσπασμός σε εἰς τὰ ὦτά με, τὸ ἐν ἐμοὶ ἐσκίρτησε, καὶ εὐλόγησε σε Καὶ Μαρία ἐπελάθετο τῶν μυςηρίων, ὧν ἐλάλησεν αὐτῇ Γαβριὴλ ὁ ̓Αρχάγ[ελ©· καὶ ἠτένισεν εἰς τὸν ἐρανὸν, καὶ εἶπε· Κύριε, τίς εἰμὶ ἐγὼ, ὅτι πᾶσαι αἱ γενεαὶ τῆς γῆς ἐμὲ μακαρίζεσιν; Ἡμέρᾳ δὲ καὶ ἡμέρᾳ ἡ γαςήρ αὐτῆς ὠγκᾶτο, καὶ φοβηθεῖσα, ἦλθεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτῆς, καὶ ἔκρυβεν ἑαυτὴν ἀπὸ τῶν υἱῶν Ισραήλ. Ἦν δὲ ἐτῶν δεκα

the High-prieft bleffed her, faying, Mary, the Lord God hath magnified thy name, and thou shalt be bleed in all the ages of the world. Then Mary, filled with joy, went away to her coufin Elizabeth,

and knocked at the door. When Elizabeth heard, the ran and opened to her, and bleffed her, and faid, IV hence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord fhould come unto me? For lo! as foon as the voice of thy falutation reached my ears, that which is in me leaped and bleed thee. But Mary, being ignorant of all thole myfterious things which the Archangel Gabriel had fpoken to her, lift up her eyes to heaven,

and faid, Lord! What am I, that all the generations of the earth hould call me blefed? But perceiving herself daily to grow big, and being afraid, the went home, and hid herfelf from the children of If rael; and was fourteen years old when all these things happened.

ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ με, καὶ ἠχμαλώτευσε τὴν παρθένον ἀπ' ἐμᾶ, καὶ ἐμίανεν αὐτήν; Μήτι ἐν ἐμοὶ ἀνεκεφαλαιώθη ἡ ἱσορία τῇ Αδάμ; ἐν γὰρ τῇ ὥρᾳ τῆς δοξολογίας αὐτο, ἦλθεν ὁ ὄφις, καὶ εὗρε τὴν Εὔαν μίνην, καὶ ἐξηπάτησεν αὐτήν· ἔτω καμοὶ συνέβη. Καὶ αν έφη Ἰωσὴφ ἀπὸ τὰ ἐδάφες, καὶ καλέσας αὐτὴν, εἶπε· Μεμελημένη τῷ Θεῷ τί τέτο πε ποίηκας ; τί ἐταπείνωσας τὴν

ψυχήν σε, ἡ ἀνατραφεῖσα εἰς ή

τὰ ἅγια τῶν ἁγίων, καὶ τροτὴν λαβᾶσα ἐκ χειρὸς τῇ Αγγέλε ; Ἡ δὲ ἔκλαυσε πικρῶς, λέγεσα· Καθαρά είμι, καὶ ἄνδρα κ γινώσκω. Καὶ εἶπεν Ἰωσήφ· Πόθεν ἐςι τὸ ἐγγάριἐν σα; καὶ εἶπεν αὐτὴ Μα

turned from his building heures abroad (which was his trade), and entering into the houre, found the Virgin grown big: then fmiting upon his face, he faid, With what face can I look up to the Lord my God? or, what fhall I fay concerning this young woman? for I received her a Virgin out of the Temple of the Lord my God, and have not preferved her fuch? Who has thus deceived me? Who has committed this

evil in my boufe, and feducing the Virgin from me, hath defled her? Is not the hiftory of Adam exadily accomplifhed in me? For in the very infant of his glorifying God (or his glory), the ferpent came and found Eve alone, and feduced her. fuft after the fame manner it has happened to me. Then Jofeph, arifing from the ground, called her, and faid, O thou who haft been fo much favoured by God, why halt thou done this? Why haft thou thus debafed thy foul, who waft educated in the Holy of Holies, and received thy food from the hand of Angels ? But the, with a flood of tears, replied, I am innocent, and have known no man. Then faid Jofeph, How comes it to pass you are with child? Mary anfwered, As the Lard

κιν. Καὶ ἐφοβήθη Ιως σὴφ σφόδρα, καὶ ἠρέμησεν ἐξ αὐτῆς, διαλογιζόμενῳ τὸ τί ἂν αὐτῇ ποιήσῃ. Καὶ εἶπεν ἐν ἑαυτῷ Ἰωσήφ· Ἐὰν κρύψω τὸ ἁμάρτημα αὐτῆς, ευρεθήσομαι ἔνοχῷ τῷ νόμῳ Κυρία· καὶ ἐὰν αὐτὴν φανερώσω τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραὴλ, φοβᾶμαι μή πως αγ[ελικόν ἐσι τὸ ἐν αὐm τῇ, καὶ εὑρεθήσομαι παραδιδὲς αἷμα ἀθῷον εἰς κρίμα θα νάτα. Τί ἐν αὐτῇ ποιήσω ; λάθρα απολύσω αὐτήν. Καὶ κατέλαβεν αὐτὸν νύξ, καὶ ἰδὲ *Αγίελο Κυρία φαίνεται αὐτῷ κατ ̓ ὄναρ, λέγων· Μὴ φοβηθῇς τὴν παῖδα ταύτην παραλαβεῖν· τὸ γὰρ ἐν αὐτῇ ὂν, ἐκ πνεύματός ἐςιν ἁγία. Τέξεται δὲ υἱὸν, καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτῷ Ἰησῶν· αὐτὸς γὰρ σώσει τὸν λαὸν αὐτῇ ἀπὸ τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν αὐτῶν. Καὶ ἀνέση Ἰωσὴφ ἀπὸ τὸ ὕπνε, καὶ ἐδόξασε τὸν Θεὸν Ἰσραὴλ τὸν δόνα αὐτῷ τὴν χάριν ταύτην, καὶ διεφύλαξε τὴν παῖδα.

Lord my God Liveth, I know not by what means.

XIV. Then Jofeph was exceedingly afraid, and went away from her, confidering

what he should do with her; and he thus reafoned with

himfelf: If I conceal her crime, I fall be found guilty by the law of the Lord, and if i difcover her to the children of I Ifrael, I fear, left he being with child by an Angel, I hall be found to betray the life of an innocent perfon : what therefore fhall I do ? I will privily difmifs her. Then the night was come upon him, when behold an Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, and faid, Be not afraid to take that young woman, for that which is within her is of the Holy Ghoft, and The Phall bring forth a fon, and thou palt call his name fefus, for he fhall fave. bis people from their fins. Then Jofeph arole from his deep, and glorified the God of Ifrael, who had thewn him fuch favour, and preserved the Virgin.
