κν. Καὶ ἦλθεν Αννας ὁ γραμματεὺς, καὶ εἶπε τῷ Ἰωσήφ· Διὰ τί ἐκ ἐφάνης τῇ εἰσόδῳ καὶ συνοδίᾳ ἡμῶν ; καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἰωσήφ· Οτι ἔκα μον ἀπὸ τῆς ὁδε, καὶ ἀνεπαν σάμην πρώτην ἡμέραν. Εσράφη δὲ ̓́Αννας, καὶ εἶδε τὴν παρθένον ὀγκαμένην, καὶ ἀπἦλθε πρὸς τὸν ἱερέα, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ἰωσήφ, ὦ συμμεμαρτύρηκας, ἠνόμισε σφόδρα" τὴν γὰρ παρθένον, ἣν παξέλαβε ἐκ να Κυρία, ἐμίανεν αὐτὴν, καὶ ἔκλεψε τές γάμος αὐτῆς, καὶ ἐκ ἐφανέρωσε τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραήλ. Καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἱερεύς· Ἰωσὴφ τᾶτο πεποίηκε; καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Αννας, Απόσειλον ὑπηρέτας, καὶ εὑρήσεις τὴν παρθένον ὀγκεμένην. Καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν οἱ ὑπηρέται, καὶ εὗρον καθὼς εἶπεν. Καὶ ἤγαγον αὐτὴν καὶ τὸν Ἰωσὴφ εἰς τὸ κριτήριον, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ ὁ ἱερεύς· Μαρία, τί τᾶτο ἐποίησας ; τί έταπείνωσας τὴν ψυχήν σε, καὶ ἐπελάθε Kvρία τε Θεῖ σε, ἡ ἀνατραφεῖσα εἰς τὰ ἅγια τῶν ἁγίων, καὶ λαβᾶσα τροφὴν ἐκ χειρὸς ἀγ. γέλη, καὶ ακέσασα τῶν ὕμε νων αὐτῶν ἢ τί δὲ τᾶτο ἐποία

xv. Then came Annas the Scribe, and faid to Jofeph, Wherefore have we not Teen you fince your return ? And Jofeph replied, Because I was weary after my journey, and refted the first day. But Annas turning about perceived the Virgin big with child, and went away to the Prieft, and told him, Jofeph, confidence, is guilty of a notoin whom you placed fo much rious crime, in that he hath defiled the Virgin whom he re ceived out of the Temple of the Lord, and bath privately married her, not difcovering it to the children of Ifrael. Then faid the Prieft, Hath Jofeph done this? Annas replied, If you fend any of your fervants, you will find that he is with child. And the fervants went, and found it as the faid. Upon this both the and Jofeph were brought to their trial; and the Prieft faid unto her, Mary, what hap thou done Why hast thou debased thy foul, and forgot thy God, feeing thou war brought up in the Holy of Holies, and did receive thy food from the hands of Angels, and heardeft their fongs ? Why

εἰμι ἐνώπιον αὐτῇ καὶ ἄνδρα 2 γινώσκω. Εἶπε δὲ ἱερεὺς πρὸς Ἰωσήφ· Τί τέτο ἐποίησας; εἶπε δὲ Ἰωσήφ Ζῇ Κύριος ὁ Θεός με, καθότι καθαρός εἰμι ἐξ αὐτῆς. Εἶπε δὲ ὁ ἱερεύς· Μὴ ψευδομαρτύρει, εἰπὲ τὸ ἀληθές. Ε"Eκλεψας τὰς γάμες αὐτῆς, καὶ ἐκ ἐφανέρωσας τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰστ ραήλ' ἐκ ἔκλινας τὴν κεφαλήν σε ὑπὸ κραταιὰν χεῖρα, ὅπερ εὐλογηθῇ τὸ σπέρμα σε. Ἐσίγησε δὲ Ἰωσήφ.

κνι. Καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἱερεύς· Απόδος τὴν παρθένον, ἣν παρέλαβες ἐκ ναῦ Κυρία. Καὶ περίδακρυς γενόμενος, εἶπεν ὁ ἱερεὺς τῷ Ἰωσήφ Ποτιῶ ὑμᾶς τὸ ὕδωρ τῆς ἐλέγξεως Κυρία, καὶ φανερώσει τὰ ἁμαρτήματα ὑμῶν ἐν ὀφθαλμοῖς ὑμῶν. Λαβὼν δὲ ὁ ἱερεὺς ἐπότισε τον Ἰωσήφ, καὶ ἔπεμψεν αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν ὀρεινὴν, καὶ ἐπανῆλθεν ὁλόκληρος. Ἐθαύμασεν δὲ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς, ὅτι αμαρτία ἐκ

But the Prieft faid, Lie not,

but declare the truth; thau and not difcovered it to the haft privately married her, children of Ifrael, and humbled thyfelf under the mighty hand (of God), that thy feed might be blefed: and Foseph was filent.

XVI. Then faid the Prieft (to Jofeph), You muft refore to the Temple of the Lord the Virgin which took thence. But he wept bitterly, and the Prieft added, I will caufe you both to drink the water of the Lord, which is for trial, and To your iniquity hall be laid open before you. Then the Prieft took (the water) and made Jofeph drink, and fent him to a mountainous place, and he returned perfectly well, and all the people wondered

ἐφάνη ἐπ' αὐτὸν, καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἱερεύς· Εἰ Κύριῳ ἐκ ἐφαγέρωσε τὰ ἁμαρτήματα ὑμῶν, ἐδὲ ἐγὼ κρίνω ὑμᾶς· καὶ ἀπέλυσεν αὐτές. Παραλαβὼν δὲ ὁ Ἰωσὴφ τὴν Μαρίαν, απίες εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτῷ, χαίρων καὶ ὑμνῶν τὸν Θεὸν Ἰσραήλ.

XVII. Εγένετο δὲ κέλευσις ὑπὸ τὸ βασιλέως Αὐγές ἀπογράφεσθαι πάντας τὰς 18δαίας, οἱ ἦσαν ἐν Βηθλεὲμ τῆς Ιεδαίας. Εἶπε δὲ Ἰωσήφ Ἐγὼ ἀπογράψομαι τις υἱές με ταύτην δὲ τὴν παῖδα τί ποιήσω; ἀπογράψασθαι αὐτ τὴν γυναῖκα ἐμὴν αἰσχύνομαι. ἀλλὰ θυγατέρα ; οἴδασι δὲ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ, ὅτι ἐκ ἔσι με θυγάτηρ. Αὐτὴ ἡ ἡμέρα Κυ ρία ποιήσει ὡς βάλεται. Καὶ ἔτρωσε τὴν ὄνον καὶ ἐκάθισεν αὐτήν, Ἰωσὴφ δὲ καὶ Σιμών ἠκολέθεν, καὶ ἤγγισαν ἐπὶ μίλια τρία. Καὶ ἐσράφη Ἰωσὴφ, καὶ εἶδε τὴν Μαρίαν συγνὴν, καὶ εἶπεν ἐν ἑαυτῷ Ἰωσήφ· Ἴσως τὸ ἐν αὐτῇ χειμάζει αὐτήν. Καὶ πάλιν ἐγράφη Ἰωσήφ, καὶ εἶδεν αὐ

XVII. And it came to pass, that there went forth a decree. from the Emperor Auguftus, that all the Jews fhould be taxed, who were of Bethlehem in Judea:and Jofeph faid, I will take care that my chil dren be taxed: but what fall I do with this young woman? To have her taxed as my wife, I am abamed; and if (I tax her) as my daughter, all Ifracl knows he is not my daughter. When the time of the Lord's appointment phall come, let him do as feems good to him. And he faddled the afs, and put her upon it, and Jofeph and Simon followed after her, and arrived (to Bethlehem) within three miles. Then Jofeph turning about faw Mary forrowful, and faid within him. feli, Perhaps he is in pair through that which is within ber. But when he turned

τὴν γελῶσαν, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ· Μαρία, τί ἐςιν, ὅτι τὸ πρόσω ωπόν σε βλέπω ποτὲ μὲν συγνὸν, ποτὲ δὲ γελῶν καὶ ἀγαλλιώμενον; καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτὸν Μαρία· Δύο λαος βλέπω τοῖς ὀφθαλμοῖς με, ἕνα κλαίοντα καὶ κοπτόμενον, καὶ ἕνα γελῶντα καὶ ἀγαλλιώς μενον. Ἦλθε δὲ πάλιν ἀνὰ μέσον τῆς ὁδῆ, καὶ εἶπεν Maρία τῷ Ἰωσήφ Καθέλον με, ὅτι ἐπείγει τὸ ἐν ἐμοὶ προελθεῖν. Καὶ εἶπεν Ἰωσήφ· Πε απάξω σε; ὅτι ὁ τόπος ἔρημᾶς ἐςι. Καὶ εἶπε πάλιν Μαρία τῷ Ἰωσήφ Κατάγαγέ με, λίαν γὰρ τὸ ἐν ἐμοὶ ἐπεί. γει με Καὶ εὐθὺς κατής γαγεν αὐτὴν Ἰωσήφ.

xvi. Εὗρε δὲ ἐκεῖ σπή λαιον, καὶ εἰσήγαγεν αὐτὴν ἐκεῖ· καὶ παραςήσας αὐτὴν τῷ σπηλαίῳ καὶ τὸς υἱὸς αὐτ τῆς ἐξῆλθε ζητῆσαι μαῖαν Εβραίαν ἐν χώρᾳ Βηθλεέμ. Ἐγὼ δὲ, λέγει Ἰωσήφ, περιπατῶν ἀνέβλεψα εἰς τὸν αέρα, καὶ εἶδον τὸν αέρα ἔκθαμβον, καὶ τὰ πετεινὰ τὸ ἐξανα ήρε. μᾶντα. Καὶ ἐπέβλεψα ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν, καὶ εἶδον σκάφην

And Mary replied laughter and joy in thy counto him, I fee two people with mine eyes, the one weeping and mourning, the other laughing and rejoicing. And he went again acrofs the way, and Mary faid to Jofeph, Take me which is in me preles to come down from the ass, for that forth. But Jofeph replied, Whither hall I take thee? for the place is defert. Then faid Mary again to Mary again to Jofeph, Take me down, for that which is within me mightily preles me. And Jofeph took her down.

XVIII. And he found there a cave, and let her into it, and leaving her and his fons in the cave, he went forth to feek a Hebrew midwife in

the village of Bethlehem. But as I was going (faid Jofeph) I looked up into the air, and I faw the clouds aftonifbed, and the fowls of the air popping in the midf of their fight. And I looked down towards the earth, and saw a table fpread, and working people

κειμένες, καὶ αἱ χεῖρες αυτῶν ἦσαν ἐπὶ τὴν σκάφην καὶ οἱ μασσόμενοι ἐκ ἐμάσ. σοντο, καὶ οἱ ἀναφέροντες ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς ἐκ ἀνέφερον, καὶ οἱ προσφέροντες τῷ τόματι ἐ προσέφερον ἀλλὰ πάντων ἦν τὰ πρόσωπα άνω βλέποντα. Καὶ εἶδον πρόβατα ἐλαυνόμενα, καὶ τὰ πρόβατα ἐςήκεισαν. Καὶ ἦρεν ὁ ποι μὴν τὴν χεῖρα αὐτε, πατάξαι αὐτὰ, καὶ ἡ χεὶρ αὐτ τῇ ἔση ἄνω. Καὶ ἔβλεψα εἰς τὸν χείμαρρον ποταμόν, καὶ εἶδον τὰς ἐρίφες καὶ τὰ σίματα αὐτῶν ἐπικείμενα τῷ ὕδατι, καὶ μὴ πίνοντα.

xΙx. Καὶ εἶδον γυναῖκα καταβαίνεσαν ἀπὸ τῆς ὀρεινῆς, καὶ εἶπέ μοι· "Ανθρωπε, πᾶ πορεύη ; καὶ εἶπον αὐτῇ· Μαῖαν ζητῶν Ἑβραίαν ἐξ Ἰστ ραήλ. Καὶ εἶπέ μοι· Π' ἐσιν ἡ γεννῶσα ; καὶ εἶπον· Ἐν τῷ σπηλαίῳ, καὶ μεμνης σευμένη μοί ἐςιν. Εἶπε δὲ ἡ μαῖα· Οὐκ ἔςι σε γυνή; καὶ εἶπεν Ἰωσήφ· Μαρία ἐσὶν ἡ ἀνατραφεῖσα εἰς τὰ ἅγια τῶν ἁγίων, ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ Κυρία, καὶ ἐκληρωσάμην αὐτὴν, καὶ ἐκ ἔσι με γυνή· ἀλλὰ σύλ

And I looked unto a river, up. and faw the kids with their mouths close to the water, and touching it, but they did not drink.

XIX. Then I beheld a wo man coming down from the mountains, and he faid to me, Where art thou going, Ο man? And I faid to her, I go to enquire for a Hebrew midwife. She replied to me, Where is the woman that is to be delivered? And I anfwered, In the cave, and the is betrothed to me. faid the midwife, Is the not thy wife? Jofeph anfwered, It is Mary, who was educated in the Holy of Holies, in the houfe of the Lord, and the fell to me by lot, and is not
