Καὶ ἦν νεφέλη φωτεινὴ ἐπισκιάζεσα τὸ σπηλαῖον, καὶ εἶπεν ἡ μαῖα· Ἐμεγαλύνθη ή ψυχή με σήμερον, ὅτι εἶδον οἱ ὀφθαλμοί με παράδοξα, καὶ ὅτι τῷ Ἰσραὴλ σωτηρία ἐγεννήθη. Παραχρήμα δὲ ἡ νε φίλη ἐγένετο φως μέγα ἐν τῷ σπηλαίῳ, ὥτε τὲς ὀφθαλμές αὐτῶν μὴ φέρειν καὶ κατ' ὀλίγον τὸ φῶς ἐκεῖ ὑπετέλλετο, ἕως ἂν τὸ βρέφος ἐφά νη, καὶ ἔλαβε μασθὸν ἐκ τῆς μητρὸς αὐτῇ Μαρίας. Καὶ ἐνεβόησεν ἡ μαῖα, καὶ εἶπεν· Ως μεγάλη αὐτὴ ἡ ἡμέρα, ὅτι εἶδον οἱ ὀφθαλμοί με και νὸν θέαμα. Then the midwife cried out, and faid, How glorious a day is this, wherein mine eyes have feen this extraordinary fight! And the midwife went out from the cave, and Salome met her, and the midwife faid to her; Salome, Salome, I will tell you a most surprising thing which I faw; a virgin bath brought forth, which is a thing contrary to nature, Το which Salome replied, As the Lord my God liveth, unlefs I receive particular proof of this matter, I will not believe that τῆς, ἐ μὴ πιςεύσω, ὅτι ἡ παρθένος ἐγέννησε. Καὶ ἐσημειώσατο Σαλώμη, καὶ ἐξηράνθη ἡ χεὶρ αὐτῆς, καὶ ἐλάλαξε πικρώς, καὶ εἶπεν· Οὐαὶ τῇ ἀνομίᾳ μα, ὅτι ἐξεπείρασα ζῶντα Θεόν· ἰδὲ γὰρ ἡ χείρ με ἀποπίπτει ἀπ' ἐμᾶ κλίνασα Σαλώμη τὰ γόνατα αὐτῆς πρὸς τὸν δεσπότην, εἶπεν· Ω Θεὸς τῶν πατέρων με, μνήσθητί με, σπέρμα γὰρ Αβραάμ, καὶ Ἰσαάκ, καὶ Ἰακώβ, εἰμὶ ἐγώ. μὴ παραδειγματίσης με τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραὴλ, ἀλλὰ ἀπόδος με τοῖς γονεῦσί με, Εὖ σὺ οἶδας, δέσποτα, ὅτι ἐπὶ τῷ σῷ ὀνόματι τὰς θεραπείας ἐπετέλων, καὶ τὸν μισθόν με παρά σε ἐλάμβανον. Καὶ ἰδὲ ἄγγελος Κυρία ἐπέση πρὸς Σαλώμην, λέγων· Ἐπήκεσε Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς τῆς δεήσεώς σε, πρόσαξον τῇ χειρί σε τὸ παιδίον, καὶ βάσασον αὐτό, καὶ ἔσαι σοι εἰς σωτηρίαν. Then Salome made her fupplication to the Lord, and faid, ο God of my fathers, remember me, for I am the feed of Abraham, and Ifaac, and Jacob; make me not a re proach among the children of Ifrael, but reftore me (found) to my parents, for thou well knoweft, O Lord, that I have performed (many) offices of charity in thy name, and have received my reward from thee. Upon this an angel of the Lord ftood by Salome, and faid, The Lord God hath heard thy prayer, reach forth thy hand to the child, and carry him, and by that means thou halt be refiored. Salome flled with exceeding joy went to the child, and faid, I will touch 기 ἂν ἔλθῃ τὸ παιδίον εἰς τὰ Ἱεροσόλυμα. Καὶ ἐκπορεύθη Σαο λώμη δεδικαιωμένη. απο xxΙ. Ἰωσὴφ δὲ ἡτοιμάσθη τῇ ἐξελθεῖν· θόρυβος γάρ γέγονεν ἐν Βηθλεὲμ, ὅτι παρεγένοντο μάγοι ἀπὸ ἀνατολῶν, λέγοντες· Πᾶ ἐσιν ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ιεδαίων γεννηθείς ; εἴδο μὲν γὰρ αὐτὸ τὸν αςέρα ἐν τῇ ἀνατολῇ, καὶ ἤλθομεν προσκυνῆσαι αὐτῷ. Ακέσας δὲ Ἡρώδης ἐταράχθη λίαν, καὶ πέμψας ὑπηρέτας ἐπὶ τές μάγος καὶ ἱερεῖς, ανέκρινεν αὐτὲς ἐν τῷ πραιτωρίῳ, λέγων αὐτοῖς· Πε γέγραπται ὑμῖν περὶ τῇ βασιλέως Χρισέ, ἢ πᾶ γεννᾶται ; τότε λέγε. • Matt. ii. xxi. So the wife men went forth, and behold, the ftar which they faw in the eaf went before them, till it came and stood over the cave where the young child was with Mary his mother. Then they brought forth out of their treafures, and offered unto unto him gold, and frankincenfe, and myrrh. And being warned in a dream by an angel, that they fhould not return to Herod through Judea, they departed into their own country by another way. XXII. Then Herod perceiving that he was mocked by the wife men, and being very angry, commanded certain men to go and to kill all the children (that were in Bethlehem) from two years old, and under. But Mary hearing that the children were to be killed, being under much fear, took the child, and wrapped him up in fwaddling clothes, and laid him in an ox-manger, becaufe there was no room for them in the inn. Elizabeth alfo, hearing that her fon (John) was about to be fearched for, took him and went up unto the mountains, and looked around for a place to hide him; and there was no fecret place to be found. Then the groaned within herfelf, and faid, Ο mountain of the Lord, receive Luke ii. 7. is alluded to, though misapplied as to time. the |
