me Dæmones, in nofocomium abii, ibique fœminam decori vultus cum puero inveni, cujus illa fascias recens lotas in tigillo fufpenderat: harum unam direptam dum capiti meo impono, reliquerunt me Dæmones, et fugerunt. Gaudio exultans Pater, Mi fili, ait, fieri poteft, ut hic puer fit filius Dei vivi, qui cœlos et terram creavit; fimulatque enim ad nos tranf iit, fractum eft idolum, ceciderunt cunctaque numina, et a vi majore deftructa funt.

XII. Hic impleta eft prophetia, quæ dicit, Ex Ægypto vocavi filium meum. Jolephum vero et Mariam, cum idolum illud corruiffe et periiffe audirent, terror et tremor invafit adeo, ut dicerent, Cum effemus in terra Ifraelis, Herodes Jefum interficere voluit, et propterea omnes infantes Bethlehemi ejufque viciniæ occidit ; neque dubium eft, quin Ægyptii, fi idolum hoc fractum corruiffe audiverint, nos igne fint crematuri.

feifed me, I went into the inn, and there found a very handfome woman with a boy, whofe fwaddling clothes fhe had just before washed, and hanged out upon a post: one of these I took and put it upon my head, and immediately the Devils left me, and fled away. At this the father exceedingly rejoiced, and faid, My fon, perhaps this boy is the fon of the living God, who made the heavens, and the earth; for as foon as he came amongst us, the idol was broke, and all the Gods fell down, and were destroyed by a greater power.

XII. Now was fulfilled the prophecy which faith, Out of Egypt I have called my fon. But Jofeph and Mary, when they heard that the idol was fallen down and destroyed, were feised with fear and trembling, and said, When we were in the land of Ifrael, Herod, intending to kill Jefus, flew for that purpose all the infants at Bethlehem, and that neighbourhood; and there is no doubt but the Egyptians, if they come to hear that this idol is broken and fallen down, will burn us with fire.

Refpondebat Jofephus, Pone nos veniet.

XIV. Deinde in aliam urbem venerunt, ubi mulier erat dæmoniaca, quam, cum noctu aliquando aquatum proceffiffet, Satanas maledictus et rebellis infederat. Hæc neque veftimenta pati, neque in ædibus durare poterat, et quotiefcunque catenis illam aut loris conftringerent, difruptis

Upon this the prisoners arose, and loofed each other's bonds, and taking each man his bags, they went away, and saw Joseph and Mary coming towards them, and enquired, Where is that king, the noise of whofe approach the robbers heard, now come off fafe? XIV. Then they went into another city, where there was a woman poffeffed with a Devil, and in whom Satan, that curfed rebel, had taken up his abode. One night,

when she went to fetch water, fhe could neither endure her clothes on, nor to be in any houfe; but as often as they tied her with chains or cords,

Sic fanata eft ifta mulier a cruciatu fuo, refipifcenfque et propter nuditatem fuam erubefcens ad fuos abiit, confpectum hominum fugitans, indutaque veftes fuas patri et propinquis rationem ftatus fui expofuit: qui, quoniam ex optimatibus civitatis erant, divam Mariam et Jofephum magná cum veneratione hofpitio exceperunt.

XV. Proxima luce, viatico probe inftructi, ab illis digreffi funt, et circa vefperam ejus diei in aliud oppidum, in quo nuptiæ celebrabantur, devenerunt; fed technis Satanæ maledictis, et opera veneficorum obmutuerat fponfa, ita ut hifcere amplius nequiret. Divam itaque Dominam Mariam, cum filium fu

When St. Mary faw this woman, fhe pitied her; whereupon Satan presently left her, and fled away in the form of a young man, faying, Wo to me, because of thee, Mary, and thy fon. So the woman was delivered from her torment; but confidering and perceiving herself naked, fhe blufhed, avoided feeing any man, and having put on her clothes, went home, and gave an account of her cafe to her father and relations, who, as they were the best of the city, entertained St. Mary and Jofeph with the greateft respect.

XV. The next morning having received a fufficient fupply of provifions for the road, they went from them, and about the evening of the day arrived at another town, where a marriage was then about to be folemnized; but by the arts of Satan, and the practices of fome forcerers, the bride was become fo dumb, that she could not fo

much as open her mouth. But when this dumb bride faw

XVI. Triduum ibi fubftiterunt, magna in veneratione habiti, et apparatu fplendido accepti. Viatico deinde instructi ab illis difcefferunt, et in aliam urbem devenerunt, in qua, quod hominum celebritate floreret, pernoctare defiderabant. Erat vero in hac urbe mulier nobilis, quæ cum aliquando lavatum ad flumen defcendiffet, ecce tibi! Satanas maledictus in forma ferpentis infiluerat in eam, et ventrem ejus circumplicaverat, fingulifque nocti

the Lady St. Mary entering into the town, and carrying the Lord Christ in her arms, fhe ftretched out her hands to the Lord Chrift, and took him in her arms, and clofely hugging him very often kiffed him, continually moving him, and preffing him to her body. Straightway the ftring of her tongue was loofed, and her ears were opened, and fhe began to fing praises unto God, who had restored her. So there was great joy among the inhabitants of the town that night, who thought that God and his Angels were come down among

them.

XVI. In this place they abode three days, meeting with the greatest respect, and most splendid entertainment; and being then furnished by the people with provisions for the road, they departed and went to another city, in which they were inclined to lodge, because it was a famous place. There was in this city a gentlewoman, who, as she went down one day to the river to bathe, behold curfed Satan. leaped upon her in the form of a ferpent, and folded himself about her belly, and every

Annuente illa, et vix admoto puero, difceffit ab illa Satanas, et fugiens eam reliquit, neque unquam poft hunc diem mulier illum vidit. Omnes ergo vicini Deum fupremum laudabant; et mulier ista magna eos benignitate

remunerabatur.

XVII. Poftero die eadem mulier aquam odoratam fumpfit, ut Dominum Jefum lavaret; eoque loto aquam illam penes fe refervavit. Eratque ibi puella, cujus corpus lepra album erat, quæ cum aqua hac perfunderetur et lavaretur, munda fuit ex tempore a lepra fua. Dicebat ergo populus: Nullum eft dubium, quin Jofephus et Maria et puer ifte Dii fint, neque enim. mortales videntur. Cum vero difceffum pararent, accedens puella ifta, quam lepra infeftaverat, rogabat illos, ut fe viæ comitem adfumerent.

night lay upon her. This woman seeing the Lady St. Mary, and the Lord Chrift the infant in her bofom, afked the Lady St. Mary, that she would give her the child to kifs, and carry in her arms. When she had consented, and as foon as the woman had moved the child, Satan left her, and fled away, nor did the woman ever afterwards fee him. Hereupon all the neighbours praised the fupreme God, and the woman rewarded them with ample

beneficence.

XVII. On the morrow the fame woman brought perfumed water to wash the Lord Jefus; and when she had washed him, fhe preserved the water. And there was a girl there, whose body was white with a leprofy, who being sprinkled with this water, and washed, was inftantly cleansed from her leprofy. The people therefore faid, Without doubt Jofeph and Mary, and that boy, are Gods, for they do not look like mortals. And when they were making ready to go away, the girl, who had been troubled with the leprofy, came and defired they

would permit her to go along with them. N 3
