propius ad te accefferit; tum fafciolam, quam dedit nobis Domina Maria, ipfi obverte, et quid futurum fit, videamus. Accedente itaque Satana ifto, qui draconem terribilem referebat, corpus puellæ præ timore inhorruit; fed fimulatque fafciolam iftam capiti fuo fuperimpofitam, et oculis obvolutam oftenderet, exibant ex fafciola flammæ et prunæ ignis, atque in draconem fpargebantur. Hem! quantum hoc miraculum, quod accidebat, fimulatque draco fafciolam Domini Jefu adfpiceret; exibat enim ignis, et in caput ejus atque oculos fpargebatur, ita ut magna voce exclamaret; Quid mihi tecum eft, O Jefu fili Maria! Quo a te fugiam? ac territus admodum, et retrocedens, puellam relinqueret. Sic puella huic negotium faceffere defiit; quæ grates Deo et laudes canebat, et cum ipfa omnes, qui miraculo ifti præfentes affu

erant.

XXXV. Alia ibidem mulier degebat, cujus filius a Satana vexabatur. Hic Judas nomine, quotiefcunque Satanas ifte illum corripiebat,

come nearer to thee; then shew him the fwaddling-cloth, which the Lady Mary gave us, and we shall fee the event. Satan then coming like a dreadful dragon, the body of the girl trembled for fear; but as foon as she had put the swaddlingcloth upon her head, and about her eyes, and shewed it to him, presently there issued forth from the swaddlingcloth flames and burning coals, and fell upon the dragon. Oh! how great a miracle was this, which was done: as foon as the dragon faw the fwaddling-cloth of the Lord Jefus, fire went forth, and was scattered upon his head and eyes; so that he cried out with a loud voice, What have I to do with thee, Jefus, thou son of Mary? Whither shall I flee from thee? So he drew back much affrighted, and left the girl. And fhe was delivered from this trouble, and fang praises and thanks to God, and with her all who were present at the working of the miracle.

XXXV. Another woman likewise lived there, whose fon was poffeffed by Satan. This boy, named Judas, as often as Satan feized him,

was

Audiens ergo mater hujus miferi famam divæ Mariæ et filii ejus Jefu, furrexit propere, ac filium fuum Judain in ulnas fublatum ad Dominam Mariam detulit. Interim Jacobus et Jofes commodum Dominum Jefum infantem abduxerant, ut cum cæteris infantibus colluderent, ac domo egreffi confederant, et cum illis Dominus Jesus. Accedebat vero Judas obfeffus, et ad dextram Jefu affidens, cum agitaret eum pro confuetudine fua Satanas, dentibus Dominum Jefum appetebat; et quoniam attingere non poterat, latus ipfius dextrum percutiebat, ita ut Jefus ploraret. Eademque hora fugiens exivit ex puero ifto Satanas, cani rabido fimilis. Hic autem puer, qui Jefum percuffit, et ex quo Satanas fub forma canis exivit, fuit Judas Ifchariotes, qui illum Judæis prodidit; et idem ejus latus, in quo percufferat illum Judas, Judæi lancea confixerunt.

was inclined to bite all that were prefent; and if he found no one else near him, he would bite his own hands and other parts. But the mother of this miferable boy, hearing of St. Mary and her fon Jefus, arose presently, and taking her fon in her arms, brought him to the Lady Mary. In the mean time, James and Jofes had taken away the infant the Lord Jefus, to play at a proper feafon with other children, and when they went forth, they fat down, and the Lord Jefus with them. Then Judas, who was poffeffed, came and fat down at the right hand of Jefus; when Satan was acting upon him as ufual, he went about to bite the Lord Jefus, and because he could not do it, he ftruck Jefus on his right fide, fo that he cried out, and in the fame moment Satan went out of the boy, and ran away like a mad dog. This fame. boy who ftruck Jefus, and out of whom Satan went in the form of a dog, was Judas Ifcariot, who betrayed him to the Jews. And that fame fide, on which Judas ftruck him, the Jews pierced with a fpear.

XXXVI.

XXXVI. Cum vero Dominus Jefus feptimum a nativitate fua annum compleviffet, die quodam cum aliis pueris fodalibus fuis cortaneis verfabatur, qui ludentes, varias ex luto formas fingebant, afinos, boves, volucres, et alia his fimilia; et unufquifque fuum jactans opus fuper cæterorum plasmate efferre conabatur. Tunc Dominus Jefus dicebat pueris, Ego illis, quas feci, figuris præcipiam, ut incederent; eademque hora fubfiliebant, et cum reverti illas juberet, revertebantur. Fecerat autem avium pafferumque figuras, quæ, cum volare ipfas juberet, volabant, et cum ftare juberentur, confiftebant; quod fi cibum et potum illis porrigeret, edebant et bibebant. Cum deinde abiiffent pueri et parentibus ifta fuis retuliffent, dicebant illis patres ipforum: Cavete in pofterum, O filii, a confortio ejus, quoniam veneficus eft; fugite illum et vitate, neque ab hoc momento unquam cum ipfo colludite.

XXXVII. Quodam etiam die Dominus Jefus, cum pueris ludens et difcurrens, offi

XXXVI. And when the Lord Jefus was seven years of age, he was on a certain day with other boys his companions about the fame age, who, when they were at play, made clay into several fhapes, viz. affes, oxen, birds, &c. each boafting of his work, and endeavouring to excel the rest. Then the Lord Jefus faid to the boys, I will command thofe figures which I have made to walk: and immediately they moved, and when he commanded them to return, they returned. He had alfo made the figures of birds and fparrows, which, when he commanded to fly, did fly, and when he commanded to ftand ftill, did ftand ftill; and if he gave them meat and drink, they did eat and drink. When at length the boys went away, and related these things to their parents, their fathers faid to them, Take heed, children, for the future of his company, for he is a forcerer; fhun and avoid him, and from henceforth never play with

bim.

XXXVII. On a certain day alfo, when the Lord Jefus was playing with the

boys,

cinam tinctoris præteribat, cujus nomen erat Salem; erantque in officina ejus panni plurimi civium illius urbis, quos variis coloribus imbuere parabant. Ingreffus vero Dominus Jefus officinam tinctoris, pannos hofce univerfos fuftulit, et in cortinam tinctoriam conjecit. Rediens Salem pannofque perditos cernens, voce maxima exclamare cœpit, et Dominum Jefum objurgare, dicens ; Quid fecifti mihi, O fili Mariæ et me et cives meos injuria affecifti; quilibet enim commodum fibi colorem expetit, tu vero adveniens omnia perdidifti. Refpondebat Dominus Jefus, Cujufcunque panni colorem mutare volueris, hunc ego tibi immutabo; ftatimque pannos ex cortina producere cœpit, ́fingulos illo colore imbutos, quem tinctor defiderabat, donec omnes eduxiffet. Hoc prodigium atque miraculum videntes Judæi Deum celebrabant.

XXXVIII. Jofephus autem, per totam urbem circumiens, Dominum Jefum fecum ducebat, cum propter ar

boys, and running about, he paffed by a dyer's shop, whose name was Salem; and there were in his shop many pieces of cloth belonging to the people of that city, which they defigned to dye of several colours. Then the Lord Jefus going into the dyer's fhop, took all the cloths, and threw them into the furnace. When Salem came home, and faw the cloths fpoiled, he began to make a great noise, and to chide the Lord Jefus, faying, What haft thou done to me, O thou fon of Mary? Thou haft injured both me and my neighbours; they all defired their cloths of a proper colour; but thou haft come, and Spoiled them all. The Lord Jefus replied, I will change the colour of every cloth to what colour thou defireft; and then he presently began to take the cloths out of the furnace, and they were all dyed of thofe fame colours which the dyer defired; and when the Jews faw this furprifing miracle, they praised God.

XXXVIII. And Jofeph, wherefoever he went in the city, took the Lord Jesus with him, where he was fent for

XXXIX. Quodam vero die accerfivit illum rex Hierofolymæ, et, Volo, inquit, Jofephe, ut folium mihi conftruas ad menfuram loci illius, in quo federe confuevi. Paruit Jofephus, ac ftatim operi manum admovens, biennium in regia manfit, donec fabricam iftius folii abfolviffet. Cum itaque illud in fede fua collocaret, ab unoquoque latere duas illud fpithamas a præfinita menfura deficere advertit. Quo vifo rex Jofepho admodum irafcebatur, et Jofephus iram regis metuens incœnatus dormiebat, cum nihil omnino guftaflet. Tunc

to work, to make gates or milk-pails, or fieves, or boxes; the Lord Jefus was with him, wherefoever he went. And as often as Jofeph had any thing in his work, to make longer or fhorter, or wider or narrower, the Lord Jefus would ftretch his hand towards it, and presently it became as Jofeph would have it; fo that he had no need to finish any thing with his own hands, for he was not very skilful at his carpenter's trade.

XXXIX. On a certain time the King of Jerufalem fent for him, and faid, I would have thee make me a throne, of the fame dimensions with that place in which I commonly fit. Jofeph obeyed, and forthwith began the work, and continued two years in the king's palace before he finished it. And when he came to fix it in its place, he found it wanted two spans on each fide of the appointed measure. Which when the King faw, he was very angry with Jofeph; and Joseph, afraid of the king's anger, went to bed without his fupper, taking not any thing to

eat.
