XLIV. Quodam etiam die, cum Dominus Jefus verfaretur inter pueros, qui in tecto ludebant, quidam puerorum ex alto decidens confeftim exfpiravit. Diffugientibus vero cæteris pueris, Dominus Jefus folus in tecto remanfit; cumque adveniffent propinqui iftius pueri, dicebant Domino Jefu, Tu filium noftrum ex tecto præcipitem dedifti. Illo autem id negante, vociferabantur, dicentes, Filius nofter mortuus eft, et hic eft, qui illum interfecit. Quibus Dominus Jefus, Ne me, inquit, arguite facinoris, cujus neutiquam me convincere poteritis; fed agite, rogemus puerum ipfum, qui veritatem in lucem producat. Tunc defcendens Dominus Jefus ftetit fuper capite mortui, et voce magna, Zeinune, inquit, Zeinune, quis te de tecto præcipitavit? Tunc refpondens mortuus, Domine, ait, non tu me dejecifti, fed à diva me ex illo deturbavit. Et cum præcepiffet Dominus adstantibus, ut ad verba ejus attenderent; omnes, qui aderant, Deum pro hoc miraculo laudabant. XLV. Jufferat aliquando diva Domina Maria Domi XLIV. On a certain day the Lord Jefus was with fome boys, who were playing on the house-top, and one of the boys fell down, and presently died. Upon which the other boys all running away, the Lord Jefus was left alone on the house-top. And the boy's relations came to him and faid to the Lord Jefus, Thou didst throw our fon down from the house-top. But he denying it, they cried out, Our fon is dead, and this is he who killed him. The Lord Jefus replied to them, Do not charge me with a crime, of which you are not able to convict me, but let us go afk the boy himself, who will bring the truth to light. Then the, Lord Jefus going down ftood over the head of the dead boy, and faid with a loud voice, Zeinunus, Zeinunus, who threw thee down from the houfe-top? Then the dead boy answered, Thou didst not throw me down, but fuch a one did. And when the Lord Jefus bad those who stood by take notice of his words, all who were prefent praised God on account of that miracle. XLV. On a certain time the Lady St. Mary had commanded num Jefum abire, et aquam XLVI. Cum vero Dominus Jefus manus fuas fuper pafferes, quos finxerat, complofiffet, avolabant illi pipien tes. Deinde filio Hanani ad manded the Lord Jefus to fetch her fome water out of the well; and when he had gone to fetch the water, the pitcher, when it was brought up full, brake; but Jefus fpreading his mantle gathered up the water again, and brought it in that to his mother; who, being astonished at this wonderful thing, laid up this, and all the other things which fhe had seen, in her memory. XLVI. Again on another. day the Lord Jesus was with fome boys by a river, and they drew water out of the river by little channels, and made little fish-pools. But the Lord Jefus had made twelve fparrows, and placed them about his pool on each fide, three on a fide. But it was the fabbath-day, and the fon of Hanani a Jew came by, and faw them making these things, and faid, Do ye thus make figures of clay on the fabbath? And he ran to them, and broke down their fifhpools. But when the Lord Jefus clapped his hands over the fparrows which he had made, they fled away chirp ing. At length the fon of Hanani coming to the fifhP 3 poo! dente, ut illam deftrueret, evanuit aqua ejus, dixitque illi Dominus Jefus: Quemadmodum evanuit aqua ifta, fic tua quoque vita evanefcet, et extemplo puer ifte exaruit. XLVII. Alio tempore, cum vefperi Dominus Jefus cum Jofepho domum reverteretur, obviam habuit puerum, qui curfu rapido concitatus, impellebat ipfum, ut caderet. Cui Dominus Jefus; Quemadmodum me impulifti, ita cades, neque furges; eadem que hora corruit puer et exfpiravit. XLVIII. Erat porro Hierofolymis quidam Zaccheus nomine, qui juventutem erudiebat. Dicebat hic Jofepho, Quare, O Jofephe, non mittis ad me Jefum, ut literas difcat? Annuebat illi Jofephus, et ad divam Mariam hoc referebat. Ad magif trum itaque illum deducebant; qui fimulatque eum confpexerat, alphabetum ipfi confcripfit, utque Aleph diceret præcepit; et cum dixiffet Aleph, magifter ipfum Beth pronunciare jubebat. Cui Dominus Jefus, Dic mihi prius fignificationem li pool of Jefus to destroy it, the water vanished away, and the Lord Jefus faid to him, In like manner as this water has vanished, so shall thy life vanih; and prefently the boy died. XLVII. Another time, when the Lord Jefus was coming home in the evening with Jofeph, he met a boy, who ran fo hard against him, that he threw him down; to whom the Lord Jesus said, As thou haft thrown me down, fa fhalt thou fall, nor ever rise. And that moment the boy fell down, and died. XLVIII. There was alfo at Jerufalem one named Zaccheus, who was a schoolmafter; he said to Jofeph, Jofeph, why doft, thou not fend Jefus to me, that he may learn his letters? Jofeph agreed, and told St. Mary: fo they brought him to that mafter; who, as foon as he faw him, wrote out an alphabet for him, and he bad him fay Aleph; and when he had faid Aleph, the mafter bad him pronounce Beth. Then the Lord Jefus said to him, Tell me first the meaning of the letter Aleph, and then teræ Aleph, et tum Beth pronunciabo. Cumque magifter verbera ipfi intentaret, exponebat illi Dominus Jefus fignificationes literarum Aleph et Beth; item quænam literarum figuræ effent recta, quænam obliquæ, quænam duplicate; quæ punctis infignitæ, quæ iifdem carentes; quare una litera aliam præcederet; aliaque plurima enarrare cœpit, et elucidare, quæ magifter ipfe nec unquam audiverat, nec in libro ullo legerat. Dixit porro magiftro Dominus Jefus, Attende, ut dicam tibi; cœpitque clare et diftincte recitare, Aleph, Beth, Gimel, Daleth, ufque ad finem alphabeti. Quod miratus magifter, Hunc, inquit, puerum ante Noachum natum effe exiftimo; converfufque ad Jofephum, Adduxifti, ait, ad me erudiendum puerum, magiftris omnibus doctiorem. Divæ quoque Mariæ inquit, Filio huic tuo nulla doctrina opus eft. I will pronounce Beth. And when the mafter threatened to whip him, the Lord Jefus explained to him the meaning of the letters Aleph and Beth; alfo which were the ftraight figures of the letters, which the oblique, and what letters had double figures; which had points, and which had none; why one letter went before another; and many other things he began to tell him, and explain; of which the mafter himself had never heard, nor read in any book. The Lord Jefus farther said to the mafter, Take notice how I fay to thee; then he began clearly and diftinctly to fay Aleph, Beth, Gimel, Daleth, and fo on to the end of the alphabet. At this the mafter was fo furprised, that he faid, I believe this boy was born before Noah; and turning to Jofeph, he faid, Thou haft brought a boy to me to be taught, who is more learned than any master. He faid alfo to St. Mary, This your fon has no need of any learning. XLIX. They brought him then to a more learned master, who, when he faw him, faid, fay Aleph; and when he had faid Aleph, the P 4 mafter gifter ipfum Beth pronunciare jubebat. Et cum factus effet annorum duodecim, duxerunt eum Hierofolymas ad feftum; finito autem fefto, ipfi quidem revertebantur, fed Dominus Jefus retro manebat in templo inter doctores et feniores, et eruditos ex filiis Ifraelis; quos de fcientiis varia interrogabat, et viciffim eis refpondebat. Dicebat enim illis, Meffias cujus eft filius? Refpondebant illi, Filius Davidis. Quare ergo, inquit, in fpiritu vocat illum Dominum fuum? quando dicit, Dixit Dominus Domino meo, fede ad dextram meam, ut hoftes tuos veftigiis pedum tuorum fubjiciam. Tum interrogabat eum princeps quidam magiftrorum, Legiftine libros? Et libros, inquit Dominus mafter bad him pronounce Beth; to which the Lord Jefus replied, Tell me first the meaning of the letter Aleph, and then I will pronounce Beth. But this mafter, when he lift up his hand to whip him, had his hand presently withered, and he died. Then faid Jofeph to St. Mary, Henceforth we will not allow him to go out of the houfe; for every one who difpleafes him is killed. L. And when he was twelve years old, they brought him to Jerufalem to the feaft; and when the feast was over, they returned, but the Lord Jefus continued behind in the temple among the doctors and elders, and learned men of Ifrael; to whom he proposed feveral questions of learning, and alfo gave them answers : for he faid to them, Whofe fon is the Meffiah? They anfwered, The fon of David: Why then, faid he, does he in the Spirit call him Lord? when he faith, The Lord faid to my Lord, fit thou at my right hand, till I have made thine enemies thy footstool.
