cerdotes et Levitas, dicit eis fecrete, Nolite fic facere; nihil in veftra accufatione dignum morte inveni, de curatione infirmorum et violatione Sabbati. Dicunt Sacerdotes et Levitæ Pilato, Per falutem Cæfaris, fi quis blafphemaverit, dignus eft morte; hic autem adverfus Dominum blasphemavit. Juffit vero præfes exire Judæos iterum prætorium; et advocans Jefum, dixit ei, Quid faciam tibi? Refpondit ei Jefus, Sicut dictum eft. Dixit ei Pilatus, Quomodo eft dictum? Dixit ei Jefus, Mofes et Prophetæ præconizati funt de paffione mea et refurrectione. Audientes hæc Judæi, exacerbati funt, et dicunt Pilato, Quid amplius vis blafphemiam iftius audire? Dicit Pilatus eis, Si ifta verba blafphemia vobis videtur, tollite eum vos, et producite ad veftram fynagogam, et fecundum legem veftram judicate eum. Pilate calling together the Elders and Scribes, Priests and Levites, faith to them privately, Do not act thus; I have found nothing in your charge (against him) concerning his curing fick persons, and breaking the Sabbath, worthy of death. The Priests and Levites replied to Pilate, By the life of Cefar, if any one be a blafphemer, he is worthy of death; but this man bath blafphemed against the Lord. Then Then the governor again commanded the Jews to depart out of the hall; and calling Jefus, faid to him, What fhall I do with thee? Jefus answered him, (Do) according as it is written. Pilate faid to him, How is it written? Jefus faith to him, Mofes and the Prophets have prophefied concerning my suffering and refurrection. The Jews hearing this, were provoked, and faid to Pilate, Why wilt thou any longer hear the blafphemy of that man? Pilate faith to them, If these words feem to you blafphemy, do ye take him, bring him to your court, and try him according to your law. The Jews re

Dicunt feniores Judæorum ad Pilatum, Ideo venimus nos et tota multitudo huc, ut moriatur. Dicit Pilatus ad eos, Quare morietur? Dicunt illi, Quia dicit feipfum filium Dei effe, et Regem.

Pilate faith unto them, If that speech of his was blafphemy, do ye try him according to your law. The Jews fay to Pilate, Our Law commands us not to put any one to death we defire that he may be crucified, because he deferves the death of the cross. Pilate faith to them, It is not fit he should be crucified; let him be only whipped and fent away. But when the governor looked upon the people that were prefent and the Jews, he faw many of the Jews in tears, and faid to the chief priests of the Jews, All the people do not defire his death. The elders of the Jews answered to Pilate, We and all the people came hither for this very purpofe, that he should die. Pilate faith to them, Why should he

die? They faid to them, Because he declares himself to be the Son of God, and a King.

Nicodemus faid, I pake to the elders of the Jews, and the Scribes, and Priefts, and Levites, and all the multitude of the Jews, in their af fembly; What is it ye would do with this man? He is a man who hath wrought many ufeful and glorious miracles, fuch as no man on earth ever wrought before, nor will ever work. Let him go, and do him no harm: if he cometh from God, his miracles (his miraculous cures) will continue; but if from men, they will come to nought. Thus Mofes, when he was fent by God into Egypt, wrought the miracles which God commanded him, before Pharaoh king of Egypt; and though the magicians of that country, Jannes and Jambres, wrought by their magick the fame miracles which Mofes did, yet they could not work all which he did: and the miracles, which the magicians ye know, O Scribes and Pha

VI. Ex Judæis quidam alius autem exiliens, rogabat præfidem, ut vellet audire verbum. Dicit præfes, Quicquid vis dicere, dic. Ego per triginta octo annos jacui Ierofolymis juxta probaticam piscinam, patiens magnam infirmitatein, expectans fanitatem quæ fiebat in adventu Angeli, qui turbabat aquam fecundum tempus; et qui prior defcendiffet in aquam poft commotionem aquæ, fanus fiebat ab omni infirmitate. Et inve

When the Jews heard this, they trembled, and gnashed their teeth at Nicodemus, and said to him, Mayeft thou receive his doctrine for truth, and have thy lot with Chrift! Nicodemus replied, Amen; I will receive (his doctrine, and my lot with him) as ye have faid.

VI. Then another certain Jew rose up, and defired leave of the governor to hear him a few words. And the governor faid, Speak what thou haft a mind. (He faid) I lay for thirty-eight years by the Sheep-pool at Jerufalem, labouring under a great infirmity, and waiting for a cure which should be wrought by the coming of an angel, who at a certain time troubled the water; and whosoever first after the troubling of the water ftepped in, was made whole of whatsoever difeafe he had.

And when Jesus saw me languishing there, he faid to me, Wilt thou be made whole? And I answered, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool. And he faid unto me, Rife, take up thy bed, and walk. And I was immediately made whole, and took up my bed, and walkeda. The Jews then faid to Pilate, Our Lord Governor, pray ask him what day it was on which he was cured of his infirmity. The infirm person replied, It was on the Sabbath. The Jews said to Pilate, Did we not fay that he wrought his cures on the Sabbath, and caft out devils by the prince of devils? Then another certain Jew came forth, and faid, I was blind, could hear founds, but could not fee any one; and as Jesus was going along, I heard the multitude passing by, and I afked what was there? They told me that Jefus was passing by: then I cried out, faying, Jefus, Son of David, have mercy upon me. And he stood still, and commanded that I fhould be brought to him, and faid to me, What wilt thou? I faid, Lord, that I may receive my fight. He faid to me, Receive thy fight; and presently I
