ὅτι Τρύφαινα, ἡ βασιλίσσα καὶ συγγενὴς αὐτο, παρὰ τὰς ἄβακας απέθανεν. Καὶ ἐκάλεσεν ὁ ἡγεμὼν τὴν Θέ κλαν ἐκ μέσε τῶν θηρίων, καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτήν· Τίς εἶ σύ; καὶ τίνα τὰ περὶ σὲ, ὅτι ἐδὲ ἓν τῶν θηρίων ἥψατό σε; Καὶ ἀπεκρίθη αὐτῷ Θέκλα Ἐγὼ δέλη εἰμὶ Θεῖ τῇ ζῶντος· τὰ δὲ περὶ ἐμὲ, εἰς ὃν ηὐδόκησεν ὁ Θεὸς, υἱὸν αὐτός Ἰησῶν Χρισὸν ἐπίςευσα· δι ̓ ὃν ἐδὲ ἓν ἥψατό με τῶν θηρίων. Οὗτος γὰρ μόνος ἐςι σωτηρίας αἰωνία ὁδὸς, καὶ ζωῆς ἀνανάτε ὑπόςασις· χειμαζομένοις γὰρ γίνεται καταφύγιον, θλιβομένοις · ἄνεσις, απηλπισα μένοις ἐλπὶς καὶ σκέπη, καὶ ἀπαξαπλῶς, ὃς ἐὰν μὴ πι δεύσει εἰς αὐτὸν, ἐ ζήσεται, ἀλλὰ ἀποθανεῖται εἰς τὰς αἰ ῶνας. CAP. XXIV. Ταῦτα ακέσας ὁ ἡγεμὼν, ἐκέλευσεν ἱμάτια ἐνεχθῆναι, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ· Ενδυσαι τὰ ἱμάτια. Ἡ δὲ Θέκλα εἶπεν· Ὁ ἐνδύσας με γυμνὴν ἔσαν ἐν τοῖς θηρίοις Θεὸς, αὐτὸς. ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κρίσεως ἐνδύσῃ σε he will certainly immediately defiroy the city, becaufe Trifina a person of royal extract, and a relation of his, is dead upon her feat. Upon this the governor called Thecla from a mong the beafts to him, and faid to her: Who art thou ? and what are thy circumftances, that not one of the beats will touch thee? Theclareplied to him: I am a fervant of the living God, and as to my fate, I am a believer on Jefus Chrift his Son, in whom God is well-pleafed, and for that reafon none of the beafts could touch me. He alone is the way to eternal falvation, and the foundation of eternal life. He is a refuge to thofe who are in diftres ; a support to the afflicted, hope and defence to thofe who are hopeless; and, in a word, all thole who do not believe on him, shall not live, but fuffer eternal death. σωτηρίαν. Καὶ λαβᾶσα τὰ ἱμάτια, ἐνεδύσατο· καὶ ἐξέπεμψε ταχέως ἄκτον ὁ ἡγεμών, γράψας ἔτως• Θές πλαν τὴν τῇ Θεῖ δέλην απολύω ὑμῖν. Καὶ αἱ γυναῖκες ὁμὲ πᾶσαι ἔκραξαν φωνῇ με γάλῃ, καὶ ὑφ ̓ ἓν ςόμα ἔδωκαν τῷ Θεῷ αἴνεσιν, λέγεσαι Εἷς Θεὸς, ὁ τῆς Θέκλης· εἷς Θεός, ο σώσας Θέκλαν ὥςε από τῆς φωνῆς αὐτῶν σεισθῆναι πᾶσαν τὴν πόλιν, καὶ τὴν Τρύφαιναν εὐαγγελισθεῖσαναναςῆναι, ἀπαντῆσαι ἀπαντῆσαι μετὰ ὄχλε, καὶ περιπλακῆναι τῇ Θέκλῃ, καὶ εἰπεῖν αὐτῇ· Νῦν πιςεύω, ὅτι νεκροὶ ἐγείρονται· νῦν πιςεύω, ὅτι τὸ τέκνον με ζῇ. Δεύρο, τέκνον με Θέκλα, ἔσω εἰς τὸν οἶκόν μες καὶ πάντα τὰ ἐμὰ σοὶ κατα γράψω. Ἡ δὲ Θέκλα ἀπῆλ δεν μετὰ τῆς Τρυφαίνης, καὶ ἀνεπαύσατο σὺν αὐτῇ ἡμέρας ὀλίγας, διδάσκεσα αὐτὴν τὸν λόγον τῇ Κυρία, ὥτε πιςεύσαι καὶ τῶν παιδισκῶν τὰς πλείονας, καὶ εἶναι μεγάλην χαι ρὰν ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ Τρυφαίνης. Ἡ δὲ Θέκλα Παῦλον ἐπεπόθει, καὶ ἐζήτει αὐτὸν, πομ vation. Then the took her clothes, and put them on; and the governor immediately publifhed an order in thefe words: I release to you Thecla the fervant of God. Upon which the women all cried out together with a loud voice, and with one accord gave praife unto God, and faid: There is but one God, who is the God of Thecla ; the one God, who hath delivered Thecla. So loud were their voices, that the whole city feemed to be fhaken; and Trifina herself heard the glad tidings, and arole again, and ran with the multitude to meet Thecla ; and embracing her, faid: Now I believe there fhall be a refurrection of the dead; now I am perfuaded that my daughter is alive. Come therefore home with me, my daughter Thecla, and I will make over all that I have to you. So Thecla went with Trifina, and was entertained there a few days, teaching her the word of the Lord, whereby many young women were converted; and there was great joy in the family of Trifna. But Thecla longed to fee Paul, and enquired and fent every where to find him; and when at length πεύεσα πανταχε· καὶ ἐμηνύθη αὐτῇ, ἐν Μύροις εἶναι τῆς Λυκίας και λάβεσα με ανίσκες πολλὲς καὶ παιδίσε κας, αναζωσαμένη τε, καὶ ῥάψασα τὸν χιτῶνα εἰς ἐπενδύτε σχῆμα ανδρικόν, απίει πρὸς αὐτὸν εἰς Μύρα της Λυκίας· καὶ εὗρεν τὸν Παῦλον λαλέντα τὸν λόγον τῷ Θεξ, καὶ παρέση αὐτῷ α θρόως. CAP. XXV. Ὁ δὲ Παῦλος ἐθαμβήθη βλέπων αὐτὴν καὶ τὸν ὄχλον τὸν μετ ̓ αὐτῆς, λογισάμενος μὴ πειρασμός ἐσιν ἕτερος. Ἡ δὲ Θέκλα συνῆκεν, καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ· Ἔλαβον τὸ λᾶτρον, Παῦλε ὁ γὰρ σοὶ ἐνεργήσας τὸ εὐαγγέλιον, καὶ μοὶ συνήρ γησεν εἰς τὸ λέσασθαι. Καὶ λαβόμενος αὐτῆς ὁ Παῦλος ἀπήγαγεν εἰς τὸν οἶκον Ερμέως· καὶ διηγήσατο Παύλῳ ἡ Θέκλα πάντα τὰ συμβεΕηκότα αὐτῇ ἐν ̓Αντιοχεία, ὥσε ἐπιπολὺ θαυμάσαι τὸν Παῦλον, καὶ πάντας τες ακέοντας σηριχθῆναι, καὶ προσεύξασθαι τῇ Τρυφαίνη. Καὶ ἀναςᾶσα Θέκλα εἶπεν τῷ Παύλῳ Πορεύομαι εἰς length the was informed that he was at Myra in Lycia, the took with her many young men and women; and putting on a girdle, and dreffing herself in the habit of a man, the went to him to Myra in Lycia, and there found Paul preaching the word of God; and the food by him among the throng. CHAP. XXV. But it was no fmall furprize to Paul, when he faw her and the people with her ; for he imagined some fresh trial was coming upon them; which when Thecla perceived, the faid to him: I have been baptized, Ο Paul; for he who afits you in preache ing, has alified me to baptize. Then Paul took her, and led her to the house of Hermes; and Thecla related to Paul all that had befallen her in Antioch, infomuch that Paul exceedingly wondered; and all who heard were confirmed in the faith, and prayed for Trifina's happiness. Then Thecla arofe, and faid to Paul, I am going to Iconium. Paul δί Ἡ Ικόνιον. Ὁ δὲ Παῦλος εἶ- CAP. XXVI. Paul replied to her : Go, and teach the word of the Lord. But Trifina had fent large fums of money to Paul, and alio clothing by the hands of Thecla, for the relief of the poor. CHAP. XXVI. So Thecla went to Ico nium. And when the came to the house of Onefiphorus, fhe fell down upon the floor where Paul had fat and Ἡ δὲ Θέκλα ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὸ Ικόνιον· καὶ εἰσέρχεται εἰς τὸν οἶκον τῇ Ονησιφόρο, καὶ ἔπεσεν εἰς τὸ ἔδαφος, ὅπε ὁ Παῦ λος καθεζόμενος ἐδίδασκεν, καὶ μετὰ κλαυθμό προσήυξατο, εὐχαριςᾶσα καὶ ἐξομολογημένη τῷ Θεῷ, καὶ λέγεσα• Κύριε ὁ Θεὸς τῇ οἴκε τέτε, ὅπε μοι τὸ φῶς αὐτῷ ἔλαμψεν, Ἰησᾶς ὁ υἱὸς τῇ Θεῖ τῷ ζῶνος, ὁ ἐμοὶ O βοηθὸς ἐπὶ ἡγεμόνων, βοηθὸς ἐν πυρὶ, βοηθὸς ἐν θηρίοις· ὅτι αὐτὸς εἶ μόνος Θεὸς, εἰς τὰς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. αμήν. CAP. XXVII. Καὶ εὗρε τὸν Θάμυριν τε θνηκότα, καὶ τὴν μητέρα αὐτῆς ζῶσαν· καὶ προσκαλε σαμένη τὴν ἑαυτῆς μητέρα, εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτήν· Θεοκλία, μῆτερ ἐμὴ, δύνασαι πιςεῦσαι, ὅτι ἐςι Θεὸς Κύριος ζῶν ἐν ὐρανοῖς; εἴτε γὰρ χρήματα preached, and, mixing tears with her prayers, the praifed and glorified God in the fol lowing words: Ο Lord, the God of this houfe, in which I was firft enlightened by thee; Jefus, Jon of the living God, who wast my helper before the governor, my helper in the fire, and my helper among the beats, thou alone art God for ever and ever, Amen. Ο CHAP. XXVII. Thecla now (on her return) found Thamyris dead, but her mother living. So calling her mother, she said to her: Theoclia, my mother, is it poffible for you to be brought to a belief, that there is but one Lord God, who dwells in the heavens ? If you αποθεῖς, δώσει σοὶ δι' ἐμὲ ὁ defire great riches, God will other things the reprefented the fign (of the crofs), left the Seleucia, and enlightened many in the knowledge of Chrift. CAP. XXVIII. Καὶ νεφέλη φωτεινὴ ὡδήγει αὐτήν. Καὶ εἰσελθέσα ἐν Σελευκίᾳ, ἐξῆλθεν ἔξω τῆς πόλεως ἀπὸ ἑνὸς ςαδία· καὶ ἐκείνες δὲ ἐδεδοίκει, ὅτι τὰ Καὶ ὁ εἴδωλα ἐθεράπευον. Καὶ ὁ δηγὸς γέγονεν αὐτῆς ἐν τῷ ὄρει τῷ λεγομένῳ Καλαμώνος, ἤτοι Ῥοδεῶνος. Καὶ εὑρᾶσα CHAP. XXVIII. And a bright cloud con ducted her in the journey. And after fhe had arrived at Seleucia, the went to a place out of the city, about the distance of a furlong, being afraid of the inhabitants, becaufe they were worthippers of idols. And the was led (by the cloud) into a mountain called Calamon, or Rodeon. There he abode many years, |
