Since writing the above, the dear child, for whose benefit the following pages were particularly designed, has been removed beyond the reach of mortal care, by one of those sharp and sudden visitations in which Providence is sometimes pleased to show the uncertainty of the best-founded human expectations. Sympathizing friendship now offers this little work to surviving affection, in memory of those engaging manners, and of that docility and sweetness of disposition, which characterized the departed infant, ere she terminated a life not quite extending to the short space of five years.

Ellen. WHAT a very pretty book, Mamma! Look, there is gold all round the edges of the cover, and the leaves are edged with gold; and the leather, it smells so nice-what sort of leather is this, Mamma, that my pretty new Bible is bound with ?

Mamma. The leather is called Russia leather, Ellen, and it is made from the skin of an animal common in Russia, though rarely met with in England. It is, therefore, very expensive, and is reckoned the handsomest that can be procured for binding, excepting only morocco leather. Yes, your book is a very handsome one, my love; but you must not look to its outside only, any book might be made valuable by means of a gilded and expensive cover. The great value
