In the Hiftory of Julius Palmer, Fellow of Magdalen's College, Martyr, the Author faith, "For by the fecret Infpiration of GOD's holy "Spirit inwardly working in his Heart, he

gave an apparent Signification in his young "Years, that if GOD had fpared his Life, he "would have been an Ornament to Chrift's "Church." Mrs. Joyce Lewes being cited to appear before one of the Romish Bishops, was told by him, "That if fhe believed no more than "the Scriptures, fhe was in a damnable Cafe. "At which Words fhe was wonderfully amaz'd, "and being moved by the Spirit of GOD, told "the Bishop his Words were ungodly, and "wicked." So all the Night before the fuffer'd (faith the Author) "The Majefty of the Spirit of "GOD did manifeftly appear in her; who did "expel the Fear of Death out of her Heart."

In a Letter of Robert Samuel, Minifter and Martyr, to his Congregation, he faith, "Now I "live, and yet not I but Chrift liveth in me! "yea I dwell in him, and he in me."

In a Letter of Robert Glover to his Wife, he faith, "I thank my heavenly Father, who of "his infinite Mercy infpired me with his holy "Spirit, &c." After his anfwering the Chancellor in Prifon, he writes, "I found in myself daily "Amendment of Health of Body, Increase of "Peace in Confcience, and many Confolations "from GOD, by the Help of his holy Spirit; "and fometimes (as it were) a Taste and Glim"mering

In an Apology made by feveral Martyrs occafion'd by many unjuft Things reported of them, they write thus, "Although we have erred for "a certain Time, yet the Root of Faith was pre"ferved in us, by the Holy Ghost which hath "reduced us into a full Certainty of the fame." When John Careless, a Martyr, was ask'd of his Faith, he answer'd, "That GOD hath predefti"nated me to eternal Life in Jefus Christ, I am "moft certain, and even fo am I fure, that his "holy Spirit wherewith I am fealed, will fo pre"ferve me from all Herefies, and evil Opinions, "that I fhall die in none at all." In the End of the fame Letter he writes, "I do moft heartily commit you, with "all the rest of your godly Fellow-Prifoners, to "GOD, who comfort, ftrengthen, and defend you with his Grace, and mighty Operation of "his Holy Spirit, as he hath hitherto done." In his Letter to Henry Adlington, a Prifoner in Lollard's Tower, he writes, "The everlasting Peace "of GOD in Jefus Chrift, the continual Aid, Strength, Joy, and Comfort of his moft pure,

Here the Doctor talked in the Language of the Defpifers of our Age, and deridingly ask'd, Ah! are you full of the Spirit? are you infpired with the Holy Ghost? To which the bleffed Martyr anfwer'd, "Šir, no Man can believe but by the Inspiration of the Holy Ghoft: Therefore if I

were not a fpiritual Man, and inspired with "GOD's holy Spirit, I were not a true Chri"ftian. Qui Spiritum Chriftum non habet hic non eft ejus, i. e. He that hath not the Spirit of Chrift is none of his. And just before he was put to Death, he fpake before many and faid, "GOD's holy Spirit certifieth our Spirits, that he "hath even now prepared for us a fweet Supper " in Heaven."
