5) grievances erklärt Johnson richtig mit sorrowful affections. Da diese Kümmernisse der Silvia eine tugendsame Begründung und Richtung haben, so willigt Eglamour ein, mit ihr zu reisen.

6) to reck in Rechnung ziehen, sich kümmern um Etwas. Die Fol. schreibt mit einer auch sonst häufigen Verwechslung wrecking.

Launce. When a man's servant 1 shall play the cur with him, look you, it goes hard: one that I brought up of a puppy; one that I saved from drowning, when three or four of his blind brothers and sisters went to it. I have taught him, even as one would say precisely, thus I would teach a dog. I was sent to deliver him as a present to mistress Silvia from my master, and I came no sooner into the dining-chamber, but he steps me to her trencher, and steals her capon's leg. 2 O! 't is a foul thing, when a cur cannot keep himself 3 in all companies. I would have, as one should say, one that takes upon him to be a dog indeed, to be, as it were, a dog at all things. 4 If I had not had more wit than he, to take a fault upon me that he did, I think verily, he had been hang'd for 't: sure as I live, he had suffer'd for 't: you shall judge. He thrusts me himself into the company of three or four gentleman-like dogs under the duke's table: he had not been there (bless the mark) a pissing

7) to intend = als Absicht zu erkennen geben, vorschützen. So in Lucrece: intending weariness; und in Taming of the Shrew (A. 4, Sc. 1) I intend, that all is done in reverend care of her. So scheint die Beichte auch hier nicht Silvia's Absicht, sondern ein Vorwand zu sein, um unbehindert ausgehen zu dürfen.

1) Unter dem Diener eines Menschen, der sich hündisch gegen seinen Herrn benommen hat, versteht Launce seinen Hund selber.

2) Der Hund stahl den Kapaunenschenkel von dem Teller der Silvia. sonst = Teller, im Allgemeinen.

6) Das me ist hier eben so pleonastisch, wie vorher he steps me, und nachher goes me, in nachlässiger Redeweise für I go!

Pro. But she receiv'd my dog?

Launce. No, indeed, did she not. Here have I brought him back again. Pro. What! didst thou offer her this from me?

Launce. Ay, Sir: the other squirrel 13 was stolen from me by the hangman's boys in the market-place; 14 and then I offer'd her mine own, who is a dog as big as ten of yours, and therefore the gift the greater.

8) Diese scherzhafte Zeitbestimmung, welche hier ganz besonders passt, findet sich sprichwörtlich auch in weniger eigentlichem Sinne; so in Ben Jonson's Magnetic Lady: have patience but a pissing while.

9) Der Mann bei Hofe, dessen Amt es war, die Hunde in Ordnung zu halten.

10) Pope änderte their servant. Aber aus many masters entnimmt Sh. jeden einzelnen Herrn in Bezug auf den betreffenden Diener.

11) Steevens wollte Julia für Silvia lesen und dachte an den Abschied, den Proteus von Julia in Verona nahm.

12) Julia hat, als Jüngling verkleidet, dem Proteus ihre Dienste als Page angeboten, und ist so eben von ihm um den Namen befragt worden.

13) Launce nennt so den andern Hund, einen Schosshund, weil er so klein war wie ein Eichhörnchen.
