Ir thou hast ever bewailed the state of the church, in these days, when men pay tithe of mint, and anise, and cummin, and omit the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith;—if thou hast contrasted the preaching now in vogue, with the preaching of JESUS CHRIST, and hast been ready to think that the commandment of God has again been made of none effect, through men's tradition ;if thou hast lamented the sectarian spirit which pervades professing christendom, checking the spread of truth, and fostering error;-if thou hast seen this spirit ruling the religious literature of the age, and hast sought in vain for a publication, devoted to the simple truth of the Gospel, and supplying the sincere and single-hearted, with a medium for the exchange of sentiment on subjects the most interesting, the most important, which can occupy the mind of man, thou wilt perhaps vouchsafe thy friendly welcome to the present Magazine, give it thy candid attention, and extend to it that indulgence which a desire to promote thy happiness may reasonably claim.
