May no Neglect mildew its Energies! May no Mishaps dim the lustre of its Fame! Swift as the Gales which impel, and firm as the Rocks which shelter it, may its Glory and its History go hand in hand to remotest Times, the Terror of the Enemies, and the Admiration of the Children of the Favoured Isle which gave it existence.

Illustrated Title-Page

Kept the gay Captain right a-head.
But when he heard the magic word
In sulky dudgeon the two tars
Lock'd in a room, securely barr'd
The haughty commandant now came
Poor Mizen, tho' no melting lubber
Now sweeter tasks await each tar

In chaise and four now gaily seated
But callous to the sordid crew

The maiden listen'd, blush'd, and look'd.

At length they reach'd the palace

The frighted slaves, the haram dames

The chief had perish'd

She was alone

And vainly now the Arabs pour'd
Two of the dark assassins fell.
There sat, and more terrific sprite
And now his confidence all flew
His eye shot forth a withering look
His brow relax'd its gloomy frown.
Then sudden starting from his stare
The tar just paus'd, as if to trace
He seem'd as one by fortune crost
The two old men their bumpers quaff'd
