brews, had conducted that people wirlin sight of the land promised to their fathers, he died; and the Lord buried him secretly, and this was done to prevent the Israelites, who were too prone to creature-worship, from giving that honour to their great Leader which was due to JEHOVAH alone.

JOSHUA, the son of Nun, was now directed by God to take the command of the Hebrew hosts and lead them over Jordan into the, nised land; and he did not hesitate to enter the great enterprize he was thus commissioned to perform. The hosts of Israel were now encamped the plains of Moab, on the eastern side of Jordan. At this season, the tune of harvest, the river

overflowed its natural bed, and swelling, rose into a huge stream, reaching to the upper banks. And at such a time it was usually impassable. But at the command of Joshua, within three days of the death of Moses, the priests, bearing the ark, moved on to enter it, and when the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, the descending stream stood and rose up upon an heap, and the people passed over. The priests then, who had rested with the ark in the bed of Jordan until all had passed over, followed them also, and when the soles of their feet were lifted up unto the dry land, the waters of Jordan returned unto their place and flowed over all its banks as before. Joshua then took twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan and set them up in Gilgal to commemorate this great event. Thus, on leaving Egypt and on entering Canaan, a similar miracle was performed by the Almighty arm in dividing the mighty waters.
