DE L'ÉGLISE SAINT-PIERRE

ET DU PALAIS DU VATICAN.

L'église de Saint-Pierre à Rome, si renommée par son immensité et par sa magnificence intérieure, fut commencée sous le pontificat de Jules II. C'est Bramante qui en donna les dessins et qui éleva la construction jusqu'à la hauteur du portail, et à la naissance du Dôme.

Le célèbre Michel-Ange Buonarroti, fut chargé de continuer cet édifice, mais il changea en partie les projets de son prédécesseur, et éleva le dôme que l'on voit aujourd'hui. Après sa mort, les travaux furent continués par Raphaël, neveu de Bramante, ensuite par Julien de San Gollo, et par Peruzzi.

La place devant Saint-Pierre est entourée en partie par deux colonnades, au milieu se trouve un obélisque en granit égyptien, avec une fontaine de chaque côté. Au-dessus de la colonnade, à droite, ou aperçoit une partie du Vatican, pa lais très-irrégulier, et si immense, qu'il contient 13 mille chambres. C'est au troisième étage de la cour que nous voyons, et dont toutes les fenêtres cintrées avoisinent le pavillon où est une horloge, que se trouvent les Loges, petite galerie qui obtint une grande célébrité, à cause des arabesques et des peintures que Raphaël y fit exécuter à fresques sur ses dessins.

The church of Saint Peter in Rome, so remarkable for it's size, and internal magnificence, was begun under the Pontificate of Julius the second. It was Bramante who furnished the designs, and erected the building to the heigth of the principal entrance, and the beginning of the dome.

The celebrated Michael-Angelo Buonarroti was directed to continue this edifice, but altering partly the plan of his predecessor, erected the dome now exhibited. After his death, the work was continued by Raffaelle the nephew of Bramante, afterwards by Julien de San Gollo, and by Peruzzi.

The square in front of Saint Peter's, is in part surrounded by two colonnades, in the midst of which, is seen an obelisk of Egyptian granit, with a fountain on each side. At the extremity of the colonnade, on the right, is seen part of the Vatican, a very irregularly built palace, and of such extent, that it contains thirteen thousand rooms.

On the third story from the court, is seen the little gallery called Le Logge whose arched windows are near the pavilion, where there is a clock; it has obtained. Its great celebrity from the arabesques and paintings, which Raffaelle executed there in fresco, upon is works.
