Nous avons déjà eu l'occasion de donner, sous le no 35, quelques notions historiques sur ce général romain. Chacun sait que eette illustre victime de la jalousie et de l'ingratitude, dépouillé de tous ses biens, privé de la lumière, était réduit à implorer la pitié publique. M. Gérard a supposé que son compagnon et son guide venant d'être piqué par un serpent que l'on voit encore, au lieu de pouvoir continuer à diriger les pas de Bélisaire, va devenir pour lui un fardeau incommode. Cependant le malheureux vieillard craignant de voir expirer son conducteur sans aucun secours, le prend sur un de ses bras, tandis que de l'autre main il tient un bâton, seul appui qui lui reste pour le guider et l'empêcher de tomber dans le précipice auprès duquel il marche.

La tête du Bélisaire est superbe; ce malheureux héros sent toute l'horreur de sa situation, mais il ne se laisse pas accabler. Le groupe se détache sur un ciel encore éclairé par les derniers rayons du soleil. Le manteau de Bélisaire est rouge et sa tunique verdâtre ; les devans sont d'un ton vigoureux et tout le tableau est d'une parfaite harmonie.

Lorsque ce tableau parut au salon de 1800, il y produisit le plus grand effet; il a été gravé depuis par M. Desnoyers, et cette estampe a également eu le plus grand succès. Le tableau se voit maintenant à Munich, dans la galerie du Prince Eugène. Haut., 7 pieds 3 pouces ; larg. 5 pieds 3 pouces.

BELISARIUS.

We have already had occasion to give, under no 25, some 'historical observations on this roman general. Every body knows that this illustrious victim of jealousy and ingratitude, despoiled of all his property and deprived of sight, was reduced to implore the pity of the public. M. Gerard has supposed that his youthful companion and guide having just been stung by a serpent, which is still visible, is thus rendered incapable of directing the steps of Belisarius, and instead of a conductor is about to become an incumbrance to him. The unfortunate old warrior, however, fearing to see his guide expire without aid, lifts him on one of his arms, whilst in the other hand he holds a staff, the sole support which remains to guide and prevent his falling down the precipice near which he is walking.

The head of Belisarius is superb; he feels all the horror of his situation, yet does not sink under it. The group is detached upon a sky still burnished with the rays of the setting sun. The cloak of Belisarius is red, and his tunic of a greenish hue; the foreground is of a vigorous tone, and the whole in perfect keeping.

When this picture appeared at the Louvre, in 1800, it produced the greatest effect; an engraving has since been made of it by M. Desnoyers, which has also met with much success. The picture is now at Munich, in the gallery of the prince Eugène.

LE GLADIATEUR MOURANT.

Cette statue est si connue sous le nom du Gladiateur mourant, qu'il est douteux qu'on parvienne à faire adopter une autre dénomination; cependant il est bien démontré qu'elle n'a aucun rapport avec les autres figures de gladiateurs. Visconti fait remarquer avec raison que les cheveux courts et hérissés, les moustaches, le profil du nez, la forme des sourcils, l'espèce de collier (torquis) qu'elle a autour du cou, tout dans cette figure concourt à y faire reconnaître un guerrier barbare, peut-être gaulois ou germain, blessé à mort et expirant en homme de courage, sur un champ de bataille couvert d'armes et d'instrumens de guerre. »

La noblesse de la pose de cette figure, une grande pureté dans les formes du torse, une expression admirable dans la tête, font justement admirer cette statue, et on est étonné de voir qu'à côté de si grandes perfections on trouve d'autres parties faibles, et même une main mauvaise, quoiqu'elle soit incontestablement antique.

Le bras droit tout entier et le bout des pieds sont des restaurations du xvIe siècle. Cette statue, en marbre de Luni, vient de la villa Ludovisi; elle est maintenant au Musée Capitolin à Rome. Si la statue était debout, elle aurait 6 pieds 6 pouces. Haut., 3 pieds.

THE WOUNDED WARRIOR,

CALLED

THE DYING GLADIATOR.

This statue is so generally known by the name of the Dying Gladiator, that it is doubtful whether another denomination would be adopted for it, although it is evidently proved to have no affinity with the other figures of gladiators. Visconti justly remarks, that « the short and bristling hair, the mustaches, profile of the nose, shape of the eyebrows, the sort of torquis collar around the neck, and every thing in this figure prove it to be meant for a barbarian warrior (perhaps a gallic or german) mortally wounded, and expiring like a brave man on the field of battle, which is strewed with arms and warlike instruments. >>

The noble posture of this figure, a great purity in the forms of the trunk, an admirable expression in the head, render this statue deservedly admired; and it excites astonishment, by the side of such eminent perfections, to find other parts feeble, and even a hand badly formed, althoug it is incontestably antique.

The whole of the right arm and the extremity of the feet are restorations of the xvrth century. This marble statue of Luni comes from the villa Ludovisi; it is now at the Museum of the Capitol at Rome. If erect it would measure 6 feet 11 inches. Height, 3 feet 2 inches 4 lines.
