Morning Prayer.

PSALM 116. Dilexi, quoniam.

[This Psalm recalls both the words of David, and the
song of Hezekiah on his recovery from his seem-
ingly fatal illness. It certainly records the

thankfulness of one who had been on the brink
of the grave.]

I AM well pleased: that the LORD hath heard
the voice of my prayer;

2 That He hath inclined His ear unto me: therefore will I call upon Him as long as I live.

3 The snares of death compassed me round about and the pains of hell gat hold upon me.

4 I shall find trouble and heaviness, and I will call upon the Name of the LORD: 0 LORD, I beseech Thee, deliver my soul.

5 Gracious is the LORD, and righteous: yea, our God is merciful.

6 The LORD preserveth the simple: I was in misery, and He helped me.

7 Turn again then unto thy rest, O my soul for the LORD hath rewarded thee.

8 And why? Thou hast delivered my soul from death: mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.

9 I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.

10 I believed, and therefore will I speak; but I was sore troubled : I said in my haste, All men are liars.

11 What reward shall I give unto the LORD for all the benefits He hath done unto me?

PSALM 117. Laudate Dominum.

[This short Psalm has been supposed to be a Dox-
ology, to be sung after other Psalms.]

O PRAISE the LORD, all ye heathen praise
Him, all ye nations.

2 For His merciful kindness is ever more and more towards us and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever. Praise the LORD.

PSALM 118. Confitemini Domino.

[This Psalm was composed for the festival celebrat-
ing the dedication of the Second Temple, built
on the return of the Jews from Babylon. Our
Lord adopts part of it as referring to Himself.
To the Jew it recalls the procession to Mount
Moriah to dedicate the Temple to God; to the
Christian it recalls the triumphal progress of
Christ over the Mount of Olives to the same

Temple, when He cleansed it of the traders who
defiled it.]

cious because His mercy endureth for ever.

PSALM 119. Beati immaculati.

[This Psalm contains twenty-two stanzas, after the Hebrew alphabet, in consecutive order. Each stanza has eight verses, and each verse has two members. Each verse begins with the same letter as that of the stanza. A name referring to God's Word occurs in every verse, except the 122d. The names are, WORD, SAYING, TESTIMONIES, WAY, JUDGMENT, PRECEPT, COMMANDMENT, LAW, STATUTE, FAITHFULNESS.]

BLESSED are those that are undefiled in the way and walk in the law of the LORD.

"It is strange that of all the pieces of the Bible which my mother taught me, that which cost me most to learn, and which was to my

child's mind most repulsive-the 119th Psalm-has now become of all the most precious to me in its overflowing and glorious passion of love for the law of God." RUSKIN.
