JUNE 2. Rear-Admiral Thomas Totty. Of this Gentleman the follow. ing account is extracted from a letter from a young Midshipman, on board the Saturn, to his father in London, dated Spithead, July 2.

"If the public reports have not already informed you, how great muft your furprife be, on receiving a letter from me, dated at Spithead, after having informed you very lately that we expected to remain fome time longer in the Weft

Indies.

"Would to God we had remained there for years, rather than that the melancholy circumstance which has caused our return had happened! in that climate even, fo inimical to English conititutions, I should have felt myself happy, fo long as I continued under the patronage of Admiral Totty. By the bleffing of God, I there enjoyed a perfect ftate of health, although daily hearing of the death of fome of my brave thipmates, moft of them cut off in the prime of life. In the midst of this mortality, the Admiral, having been on there for a few days while the ship was painting, was attacked by the fever, and on coming on board was immediately put to bed, and thinking that the trefn air at fea might benefit him, he ordered the Captain to get under way. We cruifed a day or

two off the Illand, when the Admiral

finding his end faft approaching, with the affiftance of the Secretary and Captain, he arranged the public affairs, and appointed a Commodore in the Bay. On the 24th of last month, we failed for England, and in a day or two we heard the joyful news that the Admiral was mending confiderably, and that there were fome hopes of his recovery; but Providence, alas ordained it otherwife; for on the 2d of this month, death feized upon its prey, and his noble spirit fled to the realms of blifs, to receive that reward his numberlefs virtues deferved. Thus Great Britain did lofe one of her bravelt and most zealous officers, fociety one of

79

its greatest ornaments, and I loft, more than all, my best friend and patron. The many good qualities I have found him to poffefs fince I have known him, have fo endeared him to me, and to every one that knew him, and his kindness to me has been fo great, that his memory will be cherished by me as long as there, is breath in my body. The talk would be endless were I to enumerate the many benefits he bestowed on all fuch as were fo fortunate as to be known by him. One circumftance alone will prove this affertion? having while in health promoted feveral young men who depended entirely upon him, there were still leveral left unprovided for; thefe, while on his death-bed, troubled with a multiplicity of public affairs, he fill remembered, and it was almost his first concern to give them their commiffions, and fend them on board the fhip they were appointed to. Suffice it to lay, that on board this ship, which he had been long Captain of, at his death there was fcarce a man that did not shed a tear to his memory. Totty, adieu! happiness is your portion."

Lately, at the Hague, Mr. Irhoven van Dam, late Secretary of the Council for the American poffeffions. The following eulogium in the public journals will probably be thought too highly coloured. "He may be ranked among the mot learned men of Europe. He spoke almost all the living languages as fluently as his

own.

He was alio fkilled in the Greek, Hebiew, and Latin tongues; and he was experienced in the feveral branches of the fciences. He excelled in every thing which related to the belles lettres; and, if politics had not unfortunately engrolled his attention, he would have fhone as one of the greatell fages of Europe, and acquired an immortal name. His exterior figure diftinguifhed him from nearly alt other men. He was of small tature, fhort of body, high-breafted, had a humpback, an inclining head, a long nofe, a wide mouth, and very piercing eyes. This curious machine was fupported by two laths, inftead of legs. Such was the refidence of a foul, which feemed too great for her imperfect habitation.“

ERRATUM, p. 423, for Mr. Robert Themfon, read Mr. James Thomion.

The Writer of this interefting letter was with Admiral Totty, in the Invinci We, when he was last year loft in going out of Yarmouth Roads to join the Baltic fleet.
