NOTE.-By act of the legislature of Pennsylvania, the State superintendent of public instruction assumed control of the schools for soldiers' orphans, June 31, 1871. The number of this class of orphans admitted into schools and homes since that date was 6,429.

The total cost of the system to May 31, 1872-83,467,543.81.
