TOBIE ET SA FEMME.

Une composition aussi simple pourrait bien être regardée comme une scène familière, représentant un vieillard et sa femme près de prendre leur repas; mais on doit y voir un sujet historique, dont les caractères sont suffisans pour faire reconnaitre Tobie et sa femme priant Dieu et lui demandant le retour heureux de leur fils.

Le vieillard est aveugle; sa tête chauve et sa grande barbe indiquent assez un patriarche; la carte de géographie, quoiqu'elle puisse être regardée comme un anachronisme, fait voir en même temps le soin qu'a pris le peintre de montrer avec quelle attention les parens aiment à retrouver sur la carte la route que doit suivre leur fils dans un voyage éloigné, et le plaisir qu'ils éprouvent à calculer le point de son séjour.

La couleur de ce tableau est très remarquable, les figures sont bien dessinées et bien finies, ce qui le fait regarder comme un des chefs-d'œuvre de Gérard Dow. Il faisait partie de la belle collection formée à Dordrecht par feu M. Van Dam; il n'a jamais été gravé.

TOBIT AND HIS WIFE.

So simple a composition might induce some persons to look upon this as a familiar scene, representing an old man and his wife, who are going to take their meal but it must be considered as an historical subject, the characteristics of which, indicate Tobit and his wife, offering their prayers to God, for the safe return of their son.

The old man is blind : his bald head, and long white beard, sufficiently shew him to be a patriarch: the geographical map, although it must considered as an anachronism, at the same time points out the care the artist has taken to shew with what attention the parents trace, on the map, the road, their son must follow in a distant journey; and the pleasure they feel in supposing the spot on which he then is.

The colouring of this picture is very remarkable; the figures are well drawn, and highly finished, which causes it to be looked upon as one of Gerard Dow's master pieces. It formed part of the beautiful collection formed at Dordrecht by the late M. van Dam : it has never been engraved.
